Other Notes:
- The Gazette (Montreal (Que), Monday, 9 May 1932: Bathurst, N.B., May 8 - No charge has been laid against Rufus and Wallace Pitre, brothers, of Beresford, who were arrested at their home early yesterday morning and taken to jail here in connection with the murder of George Smith, 87, at South Tetagouche on April 20. The brothers are under constant guard. Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the Pitres had been suspected for some time. Six officers went to Beresford, seven miles from here, at 2:30 a.m., yesterday and surrounded the home. The brothers, found asleep, made no resistance.
- The Windsor Star (Ont), Monday, 13 June 1932: Bathurst, N.B., June 13 - An attempted jail-break by Norman Joseph Pitre, charged with murder, was foiled Saturday after he had opened up the wooden floor of his cell and cut through a 14-inch brick wall. Reaching the basement through his self-made passage, Pitre unloosed a fall of brick which aroused Sheriff M.H. Poirier, the jailer. Royal Canadian Mounted Police were called and the prisoner was found wedged in an aperture measuring eight by 15 inches. Orders have been issued to have the cell re-lined with steel sheets pending his trial at the next assizes. Pitre is charged with the murder of George G. Smith, aged storekeeper of South Tetagouche. Pitre, also known as Rufus Pitre, lived at Bernesford, N.B.
- The Gazette (Montreal, Que), Saturday, 1 April 1933: Bathurst, N.B., March 31 - Joseph Norman "Rufus" Pitre today was sentenced to hang on June 1 and his brother, Wallace, was sentenced to a Penitentiary term of five years. Last night a jury found Rufus guilty of murdering George Smith, aged storekeeper at South Tetagouche, on April 20 last. The evidence of Wallace against his brother featured the first and second trials of Rufus. Robbery with violence was the charge in an indictment to which a Grand Jury returned a true bill in the case of Wallace today. He pleaded guilty and R.P. Hartley, K.C., Deputy Attorney-General and Crown Prosecutor, asked for leniency in view of the evidence Wallace had given. Wallace Pitre had been held during the long and complicated legal battle involving the charge of murder against Rufus. The latter's acquittal last August was appealed by the Crown and a second trial was ordered subsequently. These developments represented a precedent in British law. The sentences were pronounced in the Gloucester County Circuit Court by Mr. Justice J.B.M. Baxter.
- Billings Gazette (MT), 2 June 1933: Slayer is Hanged Despite Acquittal: Bathurst, N.B.: June 1 - Joseph Norman (Rufus) Pitre, 25, of Beresford, was hanged Thursday, marking the first instance in British jurisprudence that a person paid the supreme penalty after acquittal of a capital crime. He was found not guilty last August on a charge of murdering George G. Smith, 86-year-old storekeeper. But the New Brunswick court of appeal, acting under a new amendment to the criminal code, ordered a second trial because the lower court refused to admit certain evidence and because of nondirection and misdirection. Pitre was found guilty at the second trial and was sentenced to hang.
