Obituary:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Tuesday, 3 December 1940:  The death of Lucien P. Pitre, 74, prominent in the Prairie Ronde and Lawtell section where he was born and lived his entire life, occurred yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gilbert Carroll in Lawtell.  One of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of the community, Mr. Pitre is mourned by a host of friends besides the three daughters and six sons who survive him.  They are: Mrs. Gilbert Carroll and Mrs. Verlie Vige of Lawtell, Mrs. Orelian Bourgeois of Eunice, and Eldridge, Layton, Clifford, Robert, Frank and Horace Pitre.  The deceased leaves one sister, Mrs. Bernice Landry of Lake Charles, and one brother, Edgar Pitre of Eunice.  The funeral was held this afternoon at 1 o'clock from the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Gilbert Carroll near Lawtell with services at St. Bridget's Catholic Church and interment in the Pitre family cemetery at Prairie Ronde.

Daily World (Opelousas), Wednesday, 4 December 1940:  (photo included) Lucien Pitre, 74 year old prominent leader of the Lawtell section, was laid to rest Tuesday afternoon after his death Monday afternoon.  A member of one of the more prominent families of this section, the death of Mr. Pitre is mourned by hundreds of friends and relatives throughout the state.

Marie Noelie Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Friday, 1 July 1977:  Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the St. Landry Catholic Church for Mrs. Gilbert Carroll, the former Noelie Pitre, 80, of Opelousas, who died at 4:15 p.m. Thursday in the Opelousas General Hospital, following a short illness.  Burial will be in the Myrtle Grove Cemetery directed by Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home on the old Sunset Hwy.  A rosary will be said at 6:30 tonight in the funeral home.  Survivors include three sons, Aaron Carroll of Lawtell, Rodney and Rufus Carroll, both of Opelousas; a daughter, Mrs. J.A. (Jane) Fontenot of Lewisburg; three brothers, Clifford Pitre of Lawtell, Frank Pitre of Baton Rouge and Robert Pitre of Opelousas; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Guidry and Mrs. Aurelian (Virgie) Bourgeois, both of Lawtell; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

 

Joseph Layton Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Tuesday, 29 August 1961:  Final Mule-Drawn Iceman drops dead - Laten Pitre, 62-year-old Opelousas iceman who operated one of the last two mule-drawn ice delivery wagons in the city, dropped dead early today as he was preparing to hitch up his mule for his daily work.  Pitre and the other operator of the two mule-drawn vehicles had been scheduled for retirement later this week.  Pitre was found dead in the small pasture across the street from his home at 615 W. Guidry St.  Funeral services will be held here tomorrow.  He was a native of Lawtell but had lived in Opelousas for many years, and had operated the delivery wagon for 16 years.  Mrs. Pitre, in a statement to Capt. Gil Fontenot, said her husband must have left the house around 6 a.m. to hitch his mule to the ice wagon.  When she awoke at 7:25 a.m. she noticed that the wagon was still there and he was not in sight.  A grandchild, Michael Pitre, 6, who lives with the couple, said he went to the nearby pasture where the mule is kept.  He found the gate closed but could see his grandfather lying on the ground.  Mrs. Pitre went to the pasture and then called police.  Dr. Don Deblanc, St. Landry coroner, performed an autopsy and ruled death by coronary thrombosis.  Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church with interment in Myrtle Grove Cemetery.  A rosary will be said this afternoon at 4:45 at Lafond and Son Funeral Home, in charge of final arrangements.  Pitre is survived by his wife, the former Bible Lejeune of Opelousas; two sons, John R.A. of Opelousas and Joseph Murry of Monroe; two daughters, Mrs. Louis P. Fontenot and Mrs. Willie Castille, both of Opelousas; four brothers, Clifford of Lawtell, Eldridge of New Orleans, Frank and Robert of Swords; three sisters, Mrs. Orelian Bourgeois and Miss Hazel Pitre, both of Lawtell, and Mrs. Gilbert Carroll of Opelousas, 23 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

 

Eldridge Joseph Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Sunday, 3 November 1968:  A 64-year-old man was found dead at 6:25 a.m. Saturday in front of a radiator shop on S. Railroad Ave., it was reported by city police who were called to the scene.  He was identified as Eldridge Pitre, Genl. Del., Opelousas.  Parish coroner Dr. A.E. Williams said Pitre died of a stroke or a heart attack at approximately 4 a.m.  Personnel at Fontenot's Radiator Shop 458 S. Railroad Ave. where he was a part time employee, said Pitre had been in ill health for some time.  Funeral services under direction of First National Funeral Home, will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Lawtell.  Father Marcel Murie will officiate.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  A rosary was said at 8 p.m. Saturday.  Pitre is survived by three sons, Jessie K. of Opelousas, Joseph C., Victoria, Tex., and Eldridge Jr., Pasadena, Tex.; one daughter, Mrs. Mason Dupre of Alexandria; three brothers, Clifford of Lawtell, Frank of Swords and Robert, Opelousas; three sisters, Miss Hazel Pitre, Lawtell; Mrs. Aurelien Bourgeois, Lawtell and Mrs. Gilbert Carroll, Opelousas and eight grandchildren.

 

Clifford P. Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Thursday, 12 January 1995:  Lawtell - Funeral services for Mr. Clifford Pitre, 88, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Bridget Catholic Church here with burial in the church mausoleum.  The Rev. Austin Leger will conduct the services.  Mr. Pitre, a resident of Lawtell, died at 4:40 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, in Opelousas General Hospital.  He was a retired farmer.  Survivors include: his wife, Lillian Darbonne Pitre of Lawtell; a son, Kermit Joseph Pitre of Lawtell; a daughter, Mrs. Keith (Juanita Faye) Tweedel of Church Point; a sister, Mrs. Vergie Bourgeois of Lawtell; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.  Visiting hours are from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. Friday until time of services.  A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.  Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home on the Old Sunset Hwy. in Opelousas is in charge of arrangements.

 

Hazel Marie Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Monday, 21 July 1980:  Last rites were to be held today at 3:30 p.m. in Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church of Opelousas for Mrs. Hazel P. Guidry, 72, who died suddenly at her residence in Lawtell.  Burial was to be in the St. Bridget Cemetery in Lawtell directed by the Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home on N. Main St.  Survivors include two sons, James A. Vige of Opelousas and George Vige of Morgan City; one daughter, Mrs. John (Geraldine) Shagen of Spokane, Washington; three brothers, Clifford Pitre, Frank Pitre and Robert Pitre, all of Lawtell; one sister, Mrs. Virgie Bourgeois of Lawtell and five grandchildren.

 

Frank P. Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Thursday, 16 July 1981:  Funeral services for Mr. Frank Pitre, 71, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, Opelousas, with burial in St. Ann cemetery in Swords.  Mr. Pitre, a retired carpenter, died at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge.  He is survived by four sons, Ellis and Morris, both of Opelousas, Carl of Ville Platte and Kenneth of Eunice; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Michael of Baton Rouge and Mrs. Norma Wright of Ville Platte; two brothers, Clifford and Robert, both of Lawtell; one sister, Mrs. Virgie Bourgeois of Lawtell and 22 grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Freda Darbonne Pitre in March of 1971 and by his parents Lucien Pitre and Ann Moreau.  Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home on N. Main is directing.

 

Virgie Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Friday, 18 April 1997:  Lawtell - Funeral services for Mrs. Virgie "Pitre" Bourgeois, 82, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Bridget Catholic Church here with burial in the church cemetery.  The Rev. Austin Leger will conduct the services.  Mrs. Bourgeois, a resident of Lawtell, died at 2:55 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 1997, in Emelia Manor Nursing Home in Lafayette.  She was a housewife.  Survivors include: two daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie (Patricia) Hayes of Muskogee, Okla., and Mrs. Ceila Fusilier of Duson; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lillian Pitre of Lawtell; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Bourgeois was preceded in death by her husband, Aurelin Bourgeois in 1983.  Visiting hours will be observed from 3 to 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. Saturday until time of services.  A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.  Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home on the Old Sunset Hwy in Opelousas is in charge of arrangements.

 

Robert Edward Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Friday, 13 August 1993:  Lawtell - Funeral services for Mr. Robert Pitre, 74, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in St. Bridget Catholic Church here with burial in Pitre Cemetery in Prairie Ronde.  Mr. Pitre, a resident of Lawtell, died recently at his residence.  Survivors include: two sons, L.J. Pitre of Ville Platte and Robert E. Pitre Jr. of Port Barre; eight daughters, Mrs. Perlie Wedlock of Lawtell, Mrs. Terry Perron of Mamou, Mrs. Margaret Pitre Lavergne of Opelousas, Mrs. Margie Pitre Fusilier of Mamou, Mrs. Manuella Bernard of Galveston, Texas, Mrs. Annette Quibodeaux of Church Point, Mrs. Gladys Arnaud and Mrs. Jeanette Huff, both of Lewisburg; a brother, Cliff Pitre of Lawtell; a sister, Mrs. Vergie Bourgeois of Duson; 30 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.  Visiting hours are from 3 p.m. Saturday until time of services on Sunday.  A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.  Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home on North Main in Opelousas is in charge of arrangements.
