Notes for Francois Pouponne Pitre:

Francois Pouponne was the eldest of 10 children born at Prairie Ronde, an area of St. Landry parish and home to many other Pitres.  He was 22 when he married his 2nd cousin Azelie Pitre, who was 5 years his junior.  In the 1850 census they are newly married and he is listed as a graser.

On 1st February 1860 Francois Pouponne signed for 136.45 acres in St. Landry Parish and is found in the census owning $2500 worth of real estate, and $9100 personal estate.  Along with his wife, 6 children were listed, as well as 2 young men listed as stock holders.

Many of the Pitres seem to be missing from the 1870 census and Francois Pouponne is one I cannot locate.  The family had now grown by four, though an early son has died.

By 1880, and the birth of 3 more children, Francois and Azelie are living with the youngest 7 children.  His eldest son, also named Francois Pouponne has married Marie Louise Joubert, though she appears to have died around the time of the census.  Eldest daughter Estelle is married to Artemon LafleurArthur is married to Marie Amanda Prudhomme, and Azeline to Martin Fremont Dupre.

Both Francois Pouponne and Azelie died before the 1900 census (the 1890 was destroyed in a fire); Francois Pouponne in June of 1892 and Azelie in December 1899.  They were both buried in the Pitre family cemetery at Prairie Ronde.

Francois Pouponne Pitre's succession exists at the Opelousas Court House as #5196.  It is one I have not yet acquired.

Pitre, 87, St. Landry farmer who died in Lawtell Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock.  The funeral took place from the home of his son-in-law, Joseph Olivier, Jr., in Lawtell.  Services were at the Catholic church with interment in the Pitre cemetery in Prairie Ronde.  Many friends and relatives attended the last rites of the well-known farmer.  He is survived by a number of children and grandchildren.  The paper joins his many friends in extending condolences to his bereaved family.  _ Tribute of Respect to Francois P. Pitre: Between the years 1869 and 1874, I was at school with Francois P. Pitre.  He was a man then, I was a mere boy.  We maintained a close friendship which grew as the years rolled by.  Within a few years ago, he lived in Opelousas, and it was always a pleasure to meet him and converse with him in the French language.  He was an honest man.  He could prepare his ballot, and he always voted for the right as God gave him the light to see it.  My school mates, like the leaves of the forest, are fast disappearing.  This makes me "Feel like one Who treads alone Some banquet-hall deserted, Whose lights are fled, Whose garlands dead, And all but he departed." - Gilbert L. Dupre
