Obituary: Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Tuesday, 29 August 1961: Final Mule-Drawn Iceman drops dead - Laten Pitre, 62-year-old Opelousas iceman who operated one of the last two mule-drawn ice delivery wagons in the city, dropped dead early today as he was preparing to hitch up his mule for his daily work. Pitre and the other operator of the two mule-drawn vehicles had been scheduled for retirement later this week. Pitre was found dead in the small pasture across the street from his home at 615 W. Guidry St. Funeral services will be held here tomorrow. He was a native of Lawtell but had lived in Opelousas for many years, and had operated the delivery wagon for 16 years. Mrs. Pitre, in a statement to Capt. Gil Fontenot, said her husband must have left the house around 6 a.m. to hitch his mule to the ice wagon. When she awoke at 7:25 a.m. she noticed that the wagon was still there and he was not in sight. A grandchild, Michael Pitre, 6, who lives with the couple, said he went to the nearby pasture where the mule is kept. He found the gate closed but could see his grandfather lying on the ground. Mrs. Pitre went to the pasture and then called police. Dr. Don Deblanc, St. Landry coroner, performed an autopsy and ruled death by coronary thrombosis. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church with interment in Myrtle Grove Cemetery. A rosary will be said this afternoon at 4:45 at Lafond and Son Funeral Home, in charge of final arrangements. Pitre is survived by his wife, the former Bible Lejeune of Opelousas; two sons, John R. A. of Opelousas and Joseph Murry of Monroe; two daughters, Mrs. Louis P. Fontenot and Mrs. Willie Castille, both of Opelousas; four brothers, Clifford of Lawtell, Eldridge of New Orleans, Frank and Robert of Swords; three sisters, Mrs. Orelian Bourgeois and Miss Hazel Pitre, both of Lawtell, and Mrs. Gilbert Carroll of Opelousas, 23 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
