Obituary:  The Daily Advertiser (Lafayette, LA), Tuesday, 28 March 1950:  Opelousas, La. - Funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Bridget Catholic church at Lawtell for Mrs. Elma Fontenot Pitre, 69, who died Saturday.  She had been an invalid for several years.  Services were read by Father D. Senneville and burial was in the adjacent cemetery with Lafond and Son in charge.  Mrs. Pitre, widow of the late Arthur Pitre, was a native of Mamou and resident of Lawtell for nine years.  She is survived by three sons, Willie and Idam Pitre of Lawtell and Cleveland Pitre of Ville Platte; two daughters, Mrs. E. C. Latiolais of Lawtell and Mrs. Elizabeth Hebert of Jennings; three step-sons and one step-daughter, Simon Pitre of Plaisance, Jacques Pitre of Port Arthur, Texas, Demon Pitre of Opelousas, and Mrs. Ferdinand Vasseur of Chataignier.

Jacques Pitre:  Beaumont Journal (TX), Tuesday, 24 February 1959:  Port Arthur - Jack C. Pitre, 74, retired Port Arthur school board employee, died Monday night at St. Mary's Hospital.  A native of Opelousas, La., Mr. Pitre lived in Port Arthur 32 years.  He belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church.  Surviving are: His wife; daughters, Mrs. Guy Edwards of Port Arthur and Mrs. R.E. Haney of Gainesville, Fla.; son, Rodney Pitre of Port Arthur; brothers Simon and Damon Pitre of Opelousas; one sister and six grandchildren.

 

Simon Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Tuesday, 22 September 1964:  Funeral services for Simon Pitre, 77, retired farmer of Plaisance, were held at 8 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Prairie Ronde.  Burial was in the church cemetery under direction of Lafond and Son Funeral Home.  Pitre died at 5:50 p.m. Sunday at Opelousas General Hospital.  He had been ill for six months.  Survivors are his wife, the former Lydia Andrepont of Plaisance; two sons, Emar and Ewell Pitre both of Plaisance; and two daughters, Mrs. Lee Fontenot of Grand Prairie and Mrs. Athenis Chapman of Bellaire Cove.  Also surviving are three brothers, Willie and Adam of Lawtell and Cleveland of Ville Platte; two sisters, Mrs. Azeline Vasseur of Prairie Ronde and Mrs. J. A. Latiolais of Lawtell; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

 

Damon Joseph Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas), Wednesday, 3 August 1960:  Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. today for Damon Pitre, 70, retired farmer, who died Tuesday morning at a Lafayette hospital.  Services were held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church.  Burial was in the Catholic cemetery at Prairie Ronde with Lafond and Son Funeral Home in charge.  Pitre is survived by his wife, the former Felicie Vige of Opelousas; one son, Nelson Pitre of Lawtell; four brothers, Vellie and Issim Pitre of Lawtell, Clifford Pitre of Ville Platte and Simon Pitre of Plaisance; two sisters, Mrs. P. Vasseaur of Opelousas and Mrs. Elesia Latiolais of Lawtell; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

 

Eva Pitre:  Clarion News (Opelousas), Thursday, 6 November 1930:  Buggy Demolished as Mule is Unhurt - Mrs. Henry Pitre's Head Crushed in Tragedy Wednesday Afternoon - Mrs. Henry Pitre, 37, died a few minutes after her body was hurled 60 feet by Missouri-Pacific Fast Passenger Train 5 as it struck the buggy in which she was riding at 2:25 Wednesday afternoon.  Lillian and Atile Deville, two young sisters, miraculously saved their lives by jumping from the buggy just before the train crash.  The trio had been in Opelousas shopping and were returning home.  They came to the railroad crossing two miles west of Opelousas and did not see the train in time to avoid the tragedy.  Mrs. Pitre's body was hurled along the track about sixty feet by the impact.  Her head was crushed and bones broken.  The buggy was hurled against a cattle gap and destroyed as it fell in a nearby ditch.  The mule pulling the buggy escaped injury and ran west.  Mrs. Pitre is the mother of seven children, one, a young baby.  It was the first time she had left the infant and was on the way home at the time.  The family, well-to-do planters reside in Prairie Ronde.  The Missouri-Pacific engineer stopped the train and members of the crew attempted to take Mrs. Pitre to the Sanitarium but she died a few minutes before arrival at the hospital.  She did not gain consciousness before the end.

 

Azeline Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Friday, 19 January 1968: Funeral services for Mrs. Arthur Vasseur, 71, of Prairie Ronde, will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Prairie Ronde.  Burial will be in the Bertrand cemetery under direction of the First National Funeral Home of Opelousas.  Mrs. Vasseur died at 2:45 p.m. Thursday at her home.  She was the former Azeline Pitre.  Mrs. Vasseur is survived by four sons, Theodore of Prairie Ronde, Leo of Mamou, Nolton and J.C., both of Opelousas; and seven daughters, Mrs. Wilfred Guillory, Mrs. Foster Deville, and Mrs. Wilfred Pitre, all of Opelousas, Mrs. John Jagneaux of Eunice; Mrs. Rodney Joubert of Prairie Ronde, Mrs. James Vidrine of Church Point and Mrs. Andrew Vidrine of Ville Platte.  Also surviving are three brothers, Willie and Idam Pitre of Lawtell, and Clevan Pitre of Ville Platte; one sister, Mrs. E.C. Latiolais of Lawtell; and 37 grandchildren.

 

Una Mary Pitre:  The Daily Advertiser (Lafayette, LA), Friday, 18 June 2004:  (photo) Lawtell - Funeral services for Mrs. Una Pitre Latiolais will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at St. Bridget Catholic Church.  Interment will be in the church cemetery.  The Rev. Daniel Picard will celebrate and the Rev. Austin Leger will con-celebrate the services.  Mrs. Latiolais, 96, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, in Senior Village Nursing Home.  Survivors include her daughter, Bonnie Sinclair and husband, Jack, of Lafayette; her grandchildren, Sherry Stagg and husband, Terry, of Whiteville, Jackie Leger, of Lafayette, and David Sinclair, of Independence; her great-grandchildren, Tracey Stagg and husband, Greg, Matthew Stagg and wife, Tina, Lauren Clark and husband, Chris, all of Whiteville; and Jennifer Leger and Eric Leger, both of Lafayette; and her great-great-grandchildren, M'Lea DeRouen, Brad DeRouen and Caroline Derouen, Katlyn Stagg, Madeline Clark and Samuel Clark, all of Whiteville.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Elisha C. Latiolais; her parents, Arthur P. Pitre and the former Alma Fontenot; and a daughter, Jennise Darbonne.  Visitation was observed from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. Thursday and will continue from 9 a.m. Friday until time of services.  A rosary was prayed at 7 p.m. Thursday.  Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas is in charge of arrangements.

William Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Friday, 11 July 1980:  Mr. Willie Pitre, Sr., father of Daily World advertising director Willie Pitre, died suddenly last night at 9:50 at Opelousas General Hospital.  He was 70.  Mr. Pitre's last rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Lawtell.  He was a lifelong resident of Lawtell.  Burial will be in the mausoleum in St. Bridget Cemetery under the direction of Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home on the Old Sunset Highway.  A Rosary will be recited tonight at 8:30.  Survivors include his wife, the former Marie Manuel of Lawtell; a son, Willie Pitre, Jr., Lawtell; five daughters, Mrs. Winnie Mae Lee of Idor, Texas; Mrs. Joseph E. (Eula Mae) Faul of Lafayette, Mrs. Carlton (Ethel) Faul, Lawtell, Mrs. Doake (Mary) Meche, Arnaudville and Mrs. Pat (Anita) Soileau, Ville Platte; a sister, Mrs. Una Latiolais, Lawtell; two brothers, Idam Pitre, Lawtell and Cleve Pitre, Ville Platte and 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

 

Cleveland J. Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Sunday, 17 May 1992:  Ville Platte - Funeral services for Mr. Cleveland J. Pitre, 80, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church here with burial following at St. Bridget Cemetery in Lawtell.  Pitre, a resident of Ville Platte, died at 1:20 p.m. Saturday at Savoy Medical Center in Mamou.  He is a retired carpenter.  A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. today.  Visitation will be held from 10-10 today and from 10 a.m. until the time of services on Monday.  Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Clany Fontenot Pitre, of Ville Platte; a son, Arthur Pitre, of Ville Platte; two sisters, Mrs. Dessie Breland, of Whiteville, and Mrs. Ena Latoilais, of Lawtell; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.  Ardoin Funeral Home of Ville Platte is in charge of arrangements.

Guidry of Acworth, Ga.; a brother, Cleveland Pitre of Ville Platte; a sister, Mrs. E. C. (Euna P.)
