Leona Mary Peters: Misc.: Detroit Free Press (Detroit, MI), Sunday, 30 December 1962: A small fortune in moldy bills, wrapped in an old newspaper and stuffed into a jar, apparently by a forgetful gambler, came to light Saturday in the wake of duplicity and attempted murder. The story sounds like a morality play, to prove the adage that money corrupts. In this case the money was $11,500 in $20, $50 and $100 bills, wrapped in a Dec. 5, 1948 newspaper, and stuffed into a glass jar hidden in the crawl space under a house at 1225 Fifteenth on Detroit's near West side. The jar was discovered about Thanksgiving Day by Adolfo Acosta, 38, who bought the house for $2,000 on Oct. 13. He was crawling around, trying to dig up a faulty sewer line......A Police investigation turned up reports in the Acosta neighborhood that the former owner of the house was a gambler and was believed to have stashed large sums of money in various places. Detectives contacted Mrs. Leona Zaris, of 34534 Ecorse Rd., Wayne, who lived in the house until 1960. She confirmed that her ex-husband, George Zaris, whom she divorced in 1956, was a gambler. She said that she had no idea where he is now and expressed no surprise that Acosta had found $11,500 in a jar under the house. "Yeh," Mrs. Zaris said. "There was a lot of money around there. It could be his - George's." She indicated no interest in trying to claim the money. Gambling money which comes into the possession of police in Detroit is almost always turned over to the City's general fund - which is what might happen to the last $1,000.
