MISC: Hilaire, merchant of Beresford. (McAlpine’s N.B. Directory 1889-1896, p. 617.) * Information from Théodore Pitre, 84 years old, Beresford, to Donat Robichaud on February 5, 1979. Hilaire Pitre had the long house with store north of Heatmaster Lane. His children: 1 Victor, who inherited the house; 2 Alex, location of Gerard Pitre, on Boudreau Street; 3 Joe, location of Donald Pitre, near Millstream; 4 Jean (his wife Marcelline) he killed himself while repairing a window, fell off a scaffold, not very high, but hit his head on a rock. His widow Marcelline then married Joe Godin, Arthur’s father. Location of Roger Boudreau (Juliette’s husband to Arthur to Joe Godin). Jean’s land went up to the Town Hall; 5 A boy went to Gaspésie; 6 A girl married Pierre Haché of Nigadoo, father of Henri Haché who runs a store; 7 A son is married in Bathurst. (Note: - a daughter Rose married Stanislas Haché).
- Information from Mrs. Azèle, Beresford (deceased at 102 years old) to Donat Robichaud on May 28, 1979. 'I knew Élaire very well (she pronounces it that way) when I was very young, about ten years old. Élaire Pitre had the only store in Beresford. There was a store in Nigadoo at Windsor and in Petit Rocher the large DesBrisay store. Élaire Pitre first had a store near the Millstream where Donald Pitre lives. Then he ran his store in the long house which passed to Victor Pitre, the father of Mose Pitre. It was a large house with a bay window, which served as the display for his store. Élaire was a widower at that time. He walked with two canes. He boasted about his candies: ‘Here, some beautiful sweeties. They are soft, soft…’ Victor had a brother who lived next to him, to the south. At his death, he had three children, and his widow married Joe Godin, the father of Arthur and grandfather of Léonard. Three children: a daughter married to Jean Comeau; a daughter married to Alex or Alexis Frenette; A son, Jean Pitre, married Georgina Boudreau, the sister of Maurice Aubé, my husband. This Jean Pitre worked for Windsor, for whom he went to operate a lobster cannery at Cap D’Espoir in Gaspésie. He settled there. He had a few children who are there. In the fall, he went to work at the Windsor canneries in Montreal.

Jean Pitre: The Unione Advocate (Newcastle, NB), 29 July 1869: p 2 c 6 - John A. Pette (thus for Pitre), a house carpenter of Beresford. On the 18th (July 1869) fell from a scaffold on a new building in Bathurst. Leaves a wife and four children.
