Notes for Mathurin Ayo:
- Maturin Ayo was the 12th of 13 children born to Pierre Ayault and Marguerite Rousseau in La Rochelle, France. He was a petty officer on board L'Amitie which sailed from France on 20th August 1785 and arrived in Louisiana on 8th November. He remained in New Orleans and at St. Louis Church married 18-year-old Cecile Marguerite Boudrot, who had sailed over on L'Amitie with her family. He was given an axe, a shovel, one hatchet, one knife, and 2 hoes. They settled, along with the majority from this ship, in the Lafourche area. By the 1788 census, they had 6 arpents frontage on the bayou, 4 pigs, and were growing corn. The next property upstream was occupied by Cecile's family. Ten years after their marriage they had had only 4 children, with the last (Francois) probably dying as an infant. There do not seem to be any others. The 1810 census shows what appears to be Mathurin and Cecile with sons Joseph and Mathurin, plus daughter Rosalie. But on Mathurin's death in 1825, Cecile was deceased and only the 2 sons are listed.
