- Accident: The Daily Picayune (New Orleans, LA), Wednesday, 13 March 1907: Mrs. Boudreaux Killed - In Sight of the Little Store She Conducted - Motorman Seized Her by Waist, but Material Gave Way and She Fell Under the Wheels - There was a sad accident at the corner of Thalia and Magazine Streets last afternoon about 3:15 o'clock, and as a result Mrs. U. Boudreaux, an estimable lady, who conducted a notion store at the above corner, was killed. Mrs. Boudreaux left her store in charge of one of her daughters to go to a grocery store opposite to make a small purchase. As it was only a short distance, she covered her head with a sunbonnet. Carrying a pan, Mrs. Boudreaux started on her return to the store. Seemingly, she did not take the path just at the intersection of the streets, but walked down Magazine Street, perhaps twenty-five feet from the corner of Thalia, and attempted to cross. Just about this time car No. 315 of the Magazine Street line, in charge of Motorman Dave McGrath and Conductor Robert Gregory, came along. It happened that Mr. Jacob Kaufman, of the neighborhood, who conducts a notion store a little distance from Mrs. Boudreaux's place, was on the sidewalk, and he saw the approach of the car and the apparent indifference of the lady as she walked towards the track. Mr. Kaufman shouted to her and started to run, and at the same time the motorman tried to stop his car. Seeing that the big conveyance would not come to a halt in quick enough time, the motorman braced himself and put out a strong arm to take hold of the woman in danger. By a quick reach Motorman McGrath caught hold of Mrs. Boudreaux and lifted her from the ground. He had hold of her waist, and evidently her weight was too much for the material, which gave way, and the motorman could no longer hold her up. Mrs. Boudreaux fell to the ground, and rolled under the big car and was crushed. The crew and citizens picked up the bruised and bleeding body. Some one telephoned for an ambulance, but there was no need for physicians or medical students, as Mrs. Boudreaux was dead. At the time of the accident Mrs. Boudreaux's daughter was serving some customers in the store, and the saddest part of the affair is that the little lady and the customers witnessed some of the tragedy. The motorman was deeply touched at the unfortunate accident, and surrendered to the police. From what he said to the officers, the accident was unavoidable. McGrath remarked that he sounded his bell and did all he could to let Mrs. Boudreaux know of the approach of the car. When he first saw her crossing the street he checked his car, and believed that the lady heard the ringing of the bell and would not make another step. Instead of remaining still and away from the tracks, she suddenly started to walk across, and then it was too late to stop the conveyance. To save her from harm he reached out and caught her by the waist, and for a moment or so was hopeful that he had succeeded in saving her. Unfortunately, the waist she wore was not strong enough for her weight, and when it tore Mrs. Boudreaux fell beneath the car and was killed. Mrs. Boudreaux was 56 years old, and was the wife of A. Boudreaux, a well-known plantation engineer. About three months ago, after the death of one of her children, Mrs. Boudreaux desired to leave Thibodaux, their old home, and come to this city. Her husband and the other members of the family were glad to make the change, and when the family reached here the little store at the corner of Magazine and Thalia Streets was opened, and Mrs. Boudreaux managed it. She proved to be a lovable neighbor, and won many friends. Several children, all of whom are grown, as well as her husband, who happened to be away from the house at the time, survive the estimable lady.
