- The Estate of Louis Onesime Pitre:
On 21st January 1875 Duroudeau Francois Dupre petitioned the court that Onezime L. Pitre of St. Landry has left a small estate of movable property, an inventory needs to be taken, and a tutor needs to be appointed for the minor children of his marriage to Emerite Dupre, also deceased. He recommends a family meeting composed of Francois Dupre Sr., Auguste Bertrand, Onile Lejeune, Louis O. Pitre, Henri Durio, and Octave Dupre, nearest relatives. On 7 August 1875 a family meeting was set composed of the minor children Lucius and Theogene Octave Pitre and Francois Dupre Sr., Francois Dupre Jr., Emile H. Dupre, Francois L. Pitre, Napoleon Pitre, and Onile Lejeune to discuss the estate. On 11th August 1875 Duroudeau F. Dupre requested that the proceedings of the recent family meeting be made a judgment of the court, decreeing that the verbal transfer of the property from Onezime L. Pitre to his surviving widow Felicia Andrepont be recognized, once the balance of the property belonging to the estate is sold, as that property belonged to Felicia Andrepont before her marriage to the deceased. Inventory taken 3rd July 1875: 3 mares, 3 colts, 2 horses ($170), 6 cattle ($60), branding iron ($5), silver watch ($15), armoire ($15), bed ($25), saddle/bridle ($7.50), pistol ($10), 25 sheep ($37.50): total $345. After initial disagreement, Duroudeau Francois Dupre was appointed tutor to Lucius O. Pitre and Homere Durio tutor to Theogene Pitre with Oneil Lejeune as under-tutor (Auguste Bertrand later took over as under-tutor to Lucius & Theogene). The estate items sold for $398.35.
Notes for Felicia Andrepont:
- 4 September 1880, Opelousas Courier: Estate of Felicia Andrepont – To be sold at auction, property belonging to the estate of Felicia Andrepont: 60 arpents at Plaisance, including all buildings and improvements thereon, 10 arpents of woodland at Plaisance; one cow & calf, one brand, household furniture, crockery, etc. Francois Damon Pitre, administrator
Obituaries for the children:
Emma Pitre: St. Landry Clarion (Opelousas, LA), Saturday, 19 November 1904: Poisoned by Mistake - A sad accident occurred in the Prairie Ronde section of this parish (about ten miles from Opelousas) on last Monday evening at about 3 o'clock, as a result of which Mrs. Emma Durio (nee Pitre) met an untimely death, and her husband, Eugene Durio, is almost insane with grief. Mr. and Mrs. Durio lived happily in their country home, their frugality and industry having well fortified them against the cold side of this world. Disease, however, is impartial as upon whom to lay its ruthless hand and mar and blast happiness. Mrs. Durio suffered with liver complaint, and calomel was often resorted to for relief. Monday evening, during an attack of the very painful disease, she called upon her husband to administer to her the well-tried remedy. It appears that Mr. Durio kept in the medicine chest strychnine, which he used to poison dogs, and being illiterate, he made a mistake, and gave the suffering woman a dose of strychnine, instead of calomel. The deadly drug soon did its work, and in less than an hour the loving wife had gone to her Heavenly reward. Medical attention was promptly given, but to no avail. The unfortunate woman was the daughter of Onezime Pitre, and the more unfortunate man is the son of Arville Durio.
Theogene Pitre: Clarion News (Opelousas, LA), Thursday, 12 March 1936: Death claimed Mr. Theogene Pitre, 72, of Prairie Ronde, Tuesday. He had been ill for some time and little hope was held for his recovery. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Catholic Church and interment in the Catholic cemetery. He is survived by his wife and nine sons, Alphan, Alfred, Henry, Odeah, Moise, Eddie, Adelin, Theodore and Edna; three daughters, Mrs. Dewey Dupre, Mrs. Willie Ledoux and Mrs. Lee Fontenot.
Tombstone Inscription, Sacred Heart Prairie Ronde Cemetery: Theogene Pitre / Oct. 20, 1864 / Mar. 3, 1936 / Theresa Brown Pitre / Feb. 28, 1866 / Feb. 22, 1945
Lucius Pitre: The Town Talk (Alexandria, LA), Wednesday, 11 November 1931: Oberlin, La., Nov. 11 - (Special) - Lucius Pitre, aged 66 years, for many years a resident of this locality, died at the home of his son, Actor Pitre, about 3 o'clock Monday afternoon. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Catholic church here, with interment in the Durio cemetery, where he was laid to rest beside his wife who preceded him to the grave by two years. While Mr. Pitre's health had been failing for some time, he was not considered in immediate danger, and his sudden death was a great shock to his many relatives and friends. He was born in St. Landry parish, and was married and spent his early married life at Prairie Rhone, near Opelousas, removing to the neighborhood of Oberlin some twenty years ago. He is survived by six sons and one daughter, being Actor, Remi, Marius, Euzebe, Araste and Noah Pitre, and Mrs. Albia Deshotels, all living near by except Remi who is at Mamou and Noah, who lives near Pitkin. There are also several grandchildren, a brother, Theogene Pitre, of Prairie Rhone, in St. Landry parish, and a sister and other relatives.
