Obituary:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Tuesday, 20 January 1953:  Eunice - Funeral services were conducted at 9 a.m. yesterday at Lejeune Memorial Baptist church here for Joe Vige Pitre, 75, of Elton, who died at his home at 9:05 p.m. Saturday after an illness of three weeks.  Burial followed in the Baptist cemetery at Chataignier with the Rev. A. Carrier officiating.  Survivors include his widow, the former Eleeza Fontenot; four sons: Austin Pitre and Charles Pitre of Elton; Joe Pitre of Chataignier and Curley Pitre of Lawtell; four daughters: Mrs. Eugene Huval and Mrs. Meler Marcantel of Eunice, Mrs. Will Ryder of Elton and Mrs. Marshall Dupre of Opelousas.

Obituary:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Friday, 14 February 1964:  Eunice - Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today in Lejeune Memorial Baptist Church for Mrs. Marie Aliza Pitre, 81, who died at 9:50 a.m. Thursday in Moosa Memorial Hospital after an illness of two months.  Burial was in the Chataignier Baptist cemetery, directed by Ardoin Funeral Home.  Mrs. Pitre leaves 148 direct descendants.  Survivors are three sons, Austin Pitre, Ville Platte; Curley Pitre, Prairie Ronde; Charlie Pitre, Elton, four daughters, Mrs. Eugene Huval, Mrs. Willie Ryder and Mrs. Melvin Manuel, all of Eunice, and Mrs. Marshall Dupre, Opelousas; one brother, Adraste Fontenot of Ville Platte, and one sister, Mrs. Theodore Jory, Mamou; 48 grandchildren and 93 great-grandchildren.

Joseph L. Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Tuesday, 24 June 1958:  Eunice - Last rites were conducted at 4 p.m. Monday for Joseph L. Pitre, 57 of Chataignier, who died Sunday at his home at 4 p.m.  Mr. Pitre, a farmer, had been ill for about 10 weeks.  Services were conducted from the French Baptist Church in Chataignier with burial in the cemetery there.  Ardoin's Funeral Home of Eunice was in charge of arrangements.  Survivors include his wife, the former Oline Bertrand; his mother, Mrs. Joseph Pitre of Eunice; three sons, Aubrey Pitre of Eunice; Joseph Pitre of Chataignier and Herbert Pitre of Morgan City; six daughters: Mrs. Cyprien Johnson of Eunice, Mrs. Ardres Veillon and Mrs. Roduig Fontenot both of Morgan City, Mrs. Joseph Johnson of Beaumont, Tex., Miss Nelwyn Pitre and Miss Deanna Faye Pitre both of Chataignier, three brothers: Curley Pitre of Prairie Ronde, Charles Pitre of Elton and Austin Pitre of Eunice; four sisters, Mrs. Eugene Huval, Mrs. Melvin Dupre, Mrs. Marshall Dupre and Mrs. Willie Rider all of Eunice and twenty-two grandchildren.

Jean Baptiste Curley Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Friday, 29 December 1978:  Prairie Ronde - Funeral services are incomplete but will be held Saturday in the First Baptist Church here for Curley Pitre, 71, resident of Mamou, who died at 12 a.m. today at his residence following a long illness.  Burial will be in the church cemetery directed by Ardoin's Funeral Home of Mamou.  Survivors include his wife, the former Selida Bertrand of Mamou; two sons, Elvin Pitre of Pine Prairie and Rufus Pitre of Beggs; five daughters, Mrs. Elvin Fontenot, Mrs. Daniel Fontenot, Mrs. Jene Johnson and Mrs. Anthony Perron, all of Mamou, and Mrs. Donald Guillory of Pine Prairie; one brother, Austin Pitre of Eunice; four sisters, Mrs. Melvin Manuel, Mrs. Marshall Dupre, Mrs. Eugene Havel and Mrs. Wilfred Ryder, all of Eunice; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

 

Olla Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Tuesday, 30 December 2003:  Funeral services will be held today at 1 p.m. in Melancon Funeral Home Chapel in Opelousas, for Olla Dupre, who died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at 12:20 p.m. in Senior Village Nursing Home in Opelousas.  Interment will be in Myrtle Grove Cemetery in Opelousas.  The Rev. Roy Baker, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Opelousas, will officiate at the services.  Ms. Dupre was a native of Ville Platte, a resident of Opelousas all of her life, currently residing in Port Barre.  Survivors include: one son, Dudley Dupre Sr. and his wife Amelia of Eunice; two daughters, Juanita Bourque and her husband, Herbert of Port Barre and Hilma Hatcher of Gonzales; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Dupre; three sons, Douglas Dupre, Elvin Dupre and Rodney Dupre; one daughter, Hazel Faul; her parents, Joseph V. Pitre and the former Alizia Fontenot, both natives of Ville Platte; four brothers, Joseph Pitre, Charles Pitre, Culey Pitre and Austin Pitre; and three sisters, Mrs. 'Gros' Manuel, Mrs. 'Octivi' Huval and Mrs. 'Agnes' Ryder.  The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 8 a.m. today until time of services.  Melancon Funeral Home, Opelousas, is in charge of arrangements.

 

Lou Iry Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Thursday, 26 July 1979:  Eunice - Funeral services were to be held at 3 p.m. today in St. Anthony Catholic Church here for Mrs. Melvin Manuel, 65, of Eunice, the former Lou Iry, who died at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday after a two week illness.  Ardoin Funeral Home of Eunice was in charge of arrangements with burial in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.  Survivors include her husband, Melvin Manuel of Eunice; one daughter, Mrs. Iola Miller of Eunice; one brother, Austin Pitre of Elton; three sisters, Mrs. Eugene Hugal and Mrs. Willie Ryder, both of Eunice, and Mrs. Marshall Dupuis of Opelousas; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

 

Austin Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Thursday, 9 April 1981:  Cajun musician Austin Pitre, 63, the composer of many popular Cajun songs, died suddenly in his home Wednesday.  Pitre, who had been a popular Cajun musician and composer since the 1940's, was scheduled to go on a State Department tour of musicians to Africa this summer.  He played the violin and the accordion and was the leader of a group, The Evangeline Playboys, which played all around Acadiana.  He was well-known for his distinctive singing and playing style.  Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. today at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Eunice.  Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Eunice.  He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Ryder of Elton; five sons, A.J. of Bayou Vista, Harris J. of Patterson, Albert of Houma, Austin of Crowley and James of Elton; two daughters, Mrs. Rena Mesbah of Gretna and Mrs. Gaynor Martel of Eunice; three sisters, Mrs. Octavia Huval and Mrs. Agnes Ryder, both of Eunice, and Mrs. Olla Dupre of Opelousas.  He is also survived by 16 grandchildren.

Agnes Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Sunday, 30 October 1994:  Agnes P. Ryder: Eunice - Funeral services for Mrs. Willie Ryder, 70, the former Mrs. Willie Ryder, will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church here at 1 p.m. today, with burial after in St. Paul's Church cemetery also here.  Mrs. Ryder, a resident of Eunice, died on Friday, Sept. 28, 1994, at 8:05 p.m. at Moosa Memorial Hospital in Eunice following a long illness.  Survivors include: one son, Herline Ryder of Eunice; two daughters, Mrs. James (Debra) Richard and Mrs. Austin (Dorothy) Pitre, both of Eunice; two sisters, Mrs. Octavia Huval of Eunice and Mrs. Olla Dupre of Opelousas; 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.  Ardoin's Funeral Home of Eunice is in charge of arrangements.
