Notes for Onesime Joachin Pitre:
Onesime Joachin Pitre was the 3rd son in his family and like his predecessors followed them into farming. The Civil War intervened and Onesime Joachin became a private in Company D, 1st Louisiana Heavy Artillery (Regulars) in 1862. He was conscripted to Vicksburg but 2 months later was listed as sick in Marine Hospital. By Spring 1863 he had been moved to City Hospital in Vicksburg, Mississippi. After the War he returned to marry 19-year-old Alsina Vige in 1865.
As with many other Pitres I cannot locate this family in the 1870 census. By then Onesime & Alsina had 2 daughters, Alice & Alicia. Three more children followed but, like many other soldiers whose health had suffered, Onesime Joachin died in 1878 at the age of 35. The 1880 census contained the widow keeping house with eldest daughter Alice & youngest son Joseph Vige. Daughter Alicia was living with her grandmother, and daughter Leocadie was living with her aunt Marie Emma Pitre (married to Joseph Lucien Perrodin). A son had died.
The four surviving children eventually married and settled in the St. Landry area. Alsina is not listed with any of her children's families in the 1900 census and I have not found a 2nd marriage, so I presume she died before 1900.
Son Joseph Vige Pitre married Marie Eliza Fontenot in 1899 and they had 7 children. Joseph Vige was somewhat old for the WW1 draft but a registration card exists for him from 1918 which includes his physical description as medium height, stout build, with green eyes and black hair. He lived in Ville Platte and was a farmer for Prosper Vidrine. He died at the age of 75 in 1953 and is buried in the Chataignier Baptist Cemetery along with wife Eliza who died 11 years later at the age of 81.
