Vivian Pitre:  Death - Advocate (Baton Rouge, LA), Friday, 21 April 1950:  Raceland, April 20 - A fire that engulfed a five-room, frame farmhouse within minutes burned a 28-year-old mother and three children to death today.  Mrs. Simon Thibodaux and her three children, Betty Ann, 9; Rosemary, 8; and Marie Ann, 18 months, died in the fire before the husband and father could run to their rescue from where he was standing about 75 to 100 yards away when the blaze began.  Simon Thibodaux, 34, suffered burns and also cuts on his left arm as he dashed into the torch the fire made of his home.  He dragged his wife's body outside the dwelling, but she died within a few minutes.  The flames prevented his attempts to push back inside the house after the children.  Leonard Falgout, chief of the Raceland volunteer fire department, said the house was destroyed.  He said the Thibodaux home was located on U.S. Highway 90, about two and one half miles east of Raceland in the Utopia plantation community.  Falgout, who operates the Falgout funeral home at Raceland, said funeral services were arranged for 4 o'clock this afternoon.  Rev. Peter Nels of St. Mary's Catholic church at Raceland conducted the services, and interment was in the church's cemetery.  Cause of the fire was not known, Falgout reported, but he said it followed pouring of kerosene on a fire in the house for housekeeping use.  He said a five gallon can of kerosene exploded.  The fire occurred about 5:50 a.m. Falgout said.  Thibodaux had just left his home for work when the flames broke out, Falgout said.  Thibodaux raced back and dragged his wife's body from the house, but Falgout said she died about five minutes later.  The flames barred Thibodaux from re-entering for the children.  Falgout said the Thibodaux's had only the three children.
