- Ogdensburg Daily Journal (NY), 3 September 1889:  Stealing a Hay Mow – A Generous Sized Larceny Near Skinnerville – Stockholm Depot, August 31st 1889; Quite an interesting criminal trial has been had at Stockholm Depot.  Harlow Wright leased a farm near Skinnerville of Mary J. Smith.  By the terms of the lease all the hay was the property of Mrs. Smith.  It appeared that at midday on the 12th of August, the defendant, with the assistance of his hired man and the father and brother of the hired man, whose names are Lashamb, took a load of hay from the field, put it on the scaffold of the barn and then drew in another load and topped it out with the first load. Then the horses were so changed that the team would not be recognized, and the younger Lashamb, who was not acquainted in that vicinity, drove the load toward Potsdam until he reached Lincoln bridge, which he crossed, and then drove toward Brasher Falls, going about two miles out of his way.  The other Lashambs then sold the hay and returned to the house of the defendant where the money was put on the clock shelf, Mrs. Wright paying the elder Lashamb for drawing the hay.  Mr. Smith, husband of Mary J. Smith, hearing of the circumstance, went to Wright who denied that any hay had been drawn off the place.  Information was laid before H. W. Stearns, a justice of the peace, and the hired man was put upon the stand and testified that the hay drawn away was hay put in the barn by mistake, by his brother Joseph Lashamb.  While this was going on Wright hastened to Joseph, who was in Brasher, and advised him to "skip."  Joseph "skipped" and remained "skipped" for several days, but was finally secured and brought before the magistrate.  He testified that the hay was cut on Mrs. Smith's place and that Wright helped to load it.  A warrant was immediately issued and Wright arrested.  On the trial it appeared that after the hired man had told his false story on oath, Wright went to Joseph and told him he must tell the same story the brother had told, and thus attempted to suborn Joseph.  When Wright heard Joseph's story on the stand he refused to testify. The jury found the defendant guilty.  The court said he could find no mitigating circumstance and that it seemed that the defendant added subornation of perjury to his offence in order to cover a larceny deliberately planned, and sentenced the prisoner to six months in the county jail and to pay a fine of fifty dollars.  The prosecution was represented by L. C. Lang and the defence by N. P. Hays.  Other arrests may be made.  The hired man could not be found at the time of the trial.  Defendant's wife was too sick to attend the trial, but was better the next day.  Hopes are entertained of her recovery.

Other Notes:

- Norwood News (NY), 6 November 1918, Norfolk, N. Y., Nov. 1:  Spanish influenza followed by pneumonia has called another victim to his last resting place.  William Henry Farnsworth was born in the town of Lawrence on Jan. 8th, 1882.  Eleven years, ago he married Miss Cora LaShombe who, with three children, Irene, Elwood and Howard, survive.  Mr. Farnsworth was a good Christian man, well liked by all who knew him.  He was an employee of the Remington Paper and Power Co., having been head fireman for several years.  All of  his family were stricken with the dreadful disease that has saddened so many hearts and broken so many homes.  On Tuesday, Oct 29th, Mr. Farnsworth was forced to leave work and go home as he was so ill.  He tried to care for the others, who were ill in bed and contracted pneumonia from exposure.  He was in bed only a short time, being delirious from Sunday until he died, Monday, Oct 28, 1918, at 12:15 p m.  This was one of the saddest cases on record, as Mr. Farnsworth lay dead in the parlor and his wife and children were in the parlor bedroom too ill to be around.  Mrs. Farnsworth was unable to attend the funeral and only little Irene was allowed to go.  Besides his family he leaves to mourn his loss his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shatraw of Norfolk, also one sister, Mrs, J. A. Grady of Norfolk, and three brothers, Charles of Norwood, Asa of North Lawrence, and Olvin, who is in training at Fort Ethen Allen camp, Vermont.  His funeral was held in the Church of the Visitation of Norfolk, of which he was a faithful member, on Wednesday, Oct. 30, Rev. Alexander P. Landry officiating.  Burial in the R. C. cemetery at Norfolk.  His brother, Private Olvin Farnsworth, was unable to attend the funeral as the camp is under quarantine.

- Massena Observer (NY), Thursday 3 September 1931:  Sisters Meet in Massena – Home Broken Up 52 Years Ago:  Mrs. Rich, of New York, Visits Mrs. Sova, Massena – Each had believed other to be dead - chance turn in a conversation brought together two half-sisters last week who parted 52 years ago, both having lived in New York state in all the intervening years.  Mrs. Hattie Rich, 76, of New York city, came to the North Country several weeks ago.  She boarded at a home in Brasher Falls, believing that the outing in this section of the state would be beneficial to her health.  She happened to tell some Brasher Falls people that she once lived in this section but she supposed all her relatives had moved away or were dead.  However, she mentioned that she had a half-sister who, if living, was probably residing in this section of the state.  Then she began to inquire and she found that the half-sister was Mrs. Mary Sova, Cook street.  The two half-sisters met at the home of Mrs. Sova last week, the first time in 52 years.  Each woman had believed that the other was dead.  Mrs. Rich did not know whom her half-sister had married;  Mrs. Sova did not know the address of Mrs. Rich.  Fifty-two years ago the mother of the two women died.  Mrs. Rich was married at that time and insisted that her half-sister make her home with them.  However, the half-sister remained in this section, married at an early age, lived in Brasher Falls, Helena and finally moved to Massena where she has resided for many years.  Mrs. Rich and her husband went abroad for a time and their address was lost to Mrs. Sova.  Hearing no word from her half sister in 52 years, Mrs. Sova believed that she was dead.  Through Mrs. Rich, Mrs. Sova learned that a half-brother, George Crapser, was living in Boston.  Mrs. Sova had never heard from Mr. Crapser as he did know her married name.  Mrs. Rich came to the North Country this year for the first time in 17 years.  She came solely for her health, never dreaming that the trip to Brasher Falls would result in her finding her half-sister.  Although Mrs. Rich is 76 years old she appears to be much younger.  Mrs. Sova is 64 years of age.  (Hattie Rich nee Crapser, b. c1855)
