Probate: Last will and Testament of Francis
Petre, late of Gilford, Tuscola Co.; died 16 March 1887; will dated 18 May
1885; estimated value of personal estate $300 and real estate $3,000.
Heirs are: Polly A. Petre age 70, widow; son Francis Petre
32 of Bay Co.; son Franklin C. Petre 35 of Bay City; daughter Ann
Davis 33 of Milwaukee, Saginaw Co.; son Tousan Petre 23 (petitioner)
of Gilford township, Lincoln Co. Probate Court: Son and heir
Francis Petre Jr., through his attorney, demands a trial of the matters set
forth in (Tousan's) declaration. Claims that the deceased was moved to the
making of the will by an 'undue influence brought to bear' by Tousan when the
deceased was in a feeble state of health, that he would leave the deceased in
his enfeebled condition to care for himself and his aged wife unless the
deceased would convey to the proponent (Tousan) by will all of his property, and
by other and different means and by a constant urgency on the proponent's part
he being much of the time prior to the making of the said will with the
deceased, induced the deceased to make a conveyance of his property. That
the deceased for a long time prior to making the will was in a feeble condition
in body and mind. (25 April 1887). Witness John H. Burgess
swears to the fact that he was there when the will was signed and that the
deceased was of sound mind at the time. The will bequeaths to his son
Tousan Petre all of his real estate and personal property, on condition that
his wife Polly A. Petre be furnished with a good and comfortable home as
long as she lives, provide for clothes, and provide for her funeral when she
dies. But if his wife elects not to live with their son Tousan Petre, that
he will pay her $50 a year in advance. Signed (mark of) Francis Petre,
18 May 1885. Decision is for the sole legatee Tousan Petre.

Notes for Pauline Adelaide Dequindre:
Misc.: This seems to be her death -
- Jackson Citizen Patriot (MI), Monday, 27 January 1890: A dispatch from Gilford, Tuscola county, states that the remains of Mrs. Adaline Petre, a widow lady of 70 years were found by a neighbor Sunday in a straw-stack, where they are supposed to have lain for six weeks, in sight of the houses of her two sons, Frank and Lonson Petre. The Vassar Times, in speaking of the affair says: It seems that sometime since she was driven from the homes of her two sons by their ingratitude and abuse to seek shelter with a neighbor. She had given each of these unnatural men forty acres of land, in consideration for a home and care in her old age. Shortly after leaving the home of her sons she left her few remaining possessions with her friends and started out, telling them she was going to the woods to die. Nothing further was heard of her, and no inquiries instituted until last Sunday, when a kind neighbor took upon himself the office which should have been the sons', and after about half an hour's search found her dead body as above and practically nude, having insufficient clothing for warmth even in summer. A coroner's jury has the case in hand, and it is to be hoped for the fair fame of the community that the matter will be thoroughly sifted and full justice meted out to the guilty sons, if guilty they are. Indignation is running high in the neighborhood.
- Muskegon Chronicle, Wednesday, 29 January 1890: Mrs. Adaline Petre, of Guilford, Tuscola county, is at rest at last. She had 80 acres of good land and gave it to her two sons. Then she was turned out of doors, and she told her sons that she was going into the woods to die. The sons carefully kept this news to themselves for several weeks, and when the matter was made known search was instituted. It didn't take long to find the body, covered with a thin summer frock and that was about all. The coroner is investigating the case.
- Livingston Republic Daily Press and Argus (Howell, MI), Thursday, 6 February 1890: Inhuman Sons - The remains of Mrs. Adaline Petre, a widow lady of 70 years, were found by a neighbor in a straw-stack, in Clifford, a few days ago, where they are supposed to have lain for six weeks, in sight of the houses of her two sons, Frank and Lonson Petre, from whose homes she had been driven by their ingratitude and abuse, to seek shelter with a neighbor. She had given each of these unnatural men 40 acres of land, inconsideration for a home and care in her old age. Shortly after leaving the home of her sons she left her few remaining possessions with her friends and started out, telling them she was going to the woods to die. Nothing further was heard of her, and no inquiries instituted until a kind neighbor took upon himself the office which should have been the sons', and after about half an hour's search found her dead body as above and practically nude, having insufficient clothing for warmth even in summer.
- Weekly Expositor (Yale, MI), Friday, 7 February 1890: The coroner's jury investigating the death of Mrs. Petre of Clifford, say the old lady went away on her own account, and that her sons were anxious to keep her.
