Civil War:  During the Civil War Charles Franklin Peters enlisted in the Union Army on 16th February 1864 at Kochville, Michigan.  He was injured during the Battle of Petersburg (shot in the jaw), Virginia on 16th June 1864 and mustered out at Harper Hospital, Detroit, Michigan on 15th April 1865.  He was a member of Brady's Sharpshooters attached to the 16th Michigan infantry.  [contributed by descendant Roxanne Meida King]

Misc.:  Detroit Free Press (Detroit, MI), Wednesday, 1 November 1899:  Bay City, Mich., October 31 - On June 19, 1864, after the battle of Petersburg, N.N. Murphy, now chief of the Bay City police, was among the soldiers detailed to dig the graves for the dead who fell in the encounter.  One man who had been shot through the face, the ball entering the right side and coming out on the left, was brought in from the skirmish line and placed alongside the pit preparatory to burial.  He was one of Berdan's sharpshooters.  A delay in the services was called until some one from the man's regiment would come up and identify the wounded man.  Just then an Indian on horseback galloped up to the spot and ordered the man turned over on his back.  The Indian said he was an orderly for Gen. Otis, and said further that the man was not dead, as he knew, he having worked for a doctor in Michigan.  As the soldier was rolled upon his back, blood gushed from his mouth and his eyes opened.  It was seen that he was alive, and he was ordered taken to the hospital.  Five weeks from that time he was sent to a hospital in Detroit.  Chief Murphy heard nothing more from the man until yesterday, when Franklin C. Peters, of 600 Fremont street, West Bay City, called on him to get him to sign an application for a restoration of pension.  In the conversation that ensued, it was shown that Peters was the man for whom Murphy dug the grave before Petersburg.  Both Murphy and Peters have lived in Bay City for upwards of twenty years, and knew each other for a long time, but neither was aware that Peters was the man who had such a close call from being buried alive.

- The Bay City Tribune (Bay City, MI), Tuesday, 12 November 1912:  Franklin C. Peters, 600 North Erie street, a hack driver, and his granddaughter, Marie, aged 4, were seriously injured yesterday afternoon while Peters was unhitching his team.  The child was standing in the barn at the time, as was her custom, to welcome her grandfather on his return from work.  He had released one of the horses, and, while stopping to caress the child, the other horse started for the stall.  In so doing it swung the heavy hack with great force, pinning the child against a beam that supported the stairway, inflicting a severe cut on her head.  Mr. Peters saw the danger, and in striving to restrain the animal, was pushed against the side of the barn.  He had two ribs broken and was considerably bruised before the horse could be stopped.  A physician was immediately summoned.  It was found necessary to take three stitches in the child's scalp.  She will recover.  While not serious, the injuries sustained by Mr. Peters will confine him to the house for several weeks.  The presence of mind and his strength undoubtedly saved the child's life.

Clarence Edward Peters:  The Bay City Tribune (Bay City, MI), Sunday, 22 January 1911:  Clarence Peters, 30 years old, switchman, employed by the Michigan Central, living at 304 West Florence street, was instantly killed last night in the north yards of the Michigan Central railroad, north of the city limits, when an engine and two way cars crashed into a string of empty and loaded cars standing dead on the main track.  Engine S264, with Engineer Winchester and two way cars in charge of Paul Carrow, conductor, pulled out of the south yard to go to the Wenona yard to pick up a train.  The engine was pushing the cars north on the north-bound track, Brakeman Corrigan and Peters each on a car.  Corrigan, in company with H. Emerson, night car checker, were riding on the first car.  They did not see the empties until upon them.  Seeing a collision could not be averted, they jumped, suffering only a few scratches.  Peters, who was killed, was riding between the two way cars, and when the collision occurred he was caught between the cars, which closed up like a jackknife, and his life crushed out instantly.  The engineer of the train says that he was not running more than five miles an hour.  M. C. Coyle, division superintendent, said last night that there would be nothing for publication other than the bare facts that there had been an accident and that an investigation would be made by the company Monday.  He said that although the way cars were nearly demolished, he did not think that the train was running faster than the engineer had stated.  Being asked as to the placing of danger signals, he said that he was not in a position to make any statement regarding them.  Coroner Kelley was called and impanneled a jury to hold an inquest.  Mr. Peters was well known in the city, having lived here all his life.  He had been in the employ of the railroad about four months as brakeman, running on extras.  He is survived by a wife and two children.
