- The first of the Trosclair Plantations was established 6 miles above Thibodaux on the left bank of Bayou Lafourche by Christophe. It was an extensive sugar plantation and one of the first in Lafourche Parish to use steam-powered machinery, producing 90-100 barique (hogsheads) of sugar per season. Just as the plantation was at its height, prospering greatly, tragedy struck as both Christophe and second wife Marie died from the dreaded yellow fever. The Trosclair family used oxen in their sugar fields well into the 20th century. [unknown source]
