Notes for 'Nolle' Pierre Pitre:

Nolle Pierre, at the age of 23, married his 2nd cousin Estelle Pitre on the eve of Civil War.  During the Civil War Nolle enlisted as a private in Co. B, 8th Louisiana Cavalry.  He was eventually taken prisoner, but was paroled on 19 June 1865.

There are many Pitre families missing from the 1870 census, and Nolle is one I cannot locate.  He does appear in the 1880 census, with wife Estelle listed as partially blind, and 5 children, having lost 3 other children as infants.  Two more children were born before Estelle died in 1885 at the age of 42.  Nolle followed her 5 years later in 1890 at the age of 53.  Nolle Pierre and Estelle are buried together in the old Opelousas Cemetery, where the tombstone includes his military service and their birth/death dates.

Many of the remaining children died early as well: Martha in 1886, age 21, Laura in 1887, age 15, and Joseph in 1895, age 17.  Lelia married Benjamin Franklin Roberts in 1891 but died 5 years later at the age of 29.  Sons Michel and Adam were the only offspring to carry the Pitre surname in the 20th century.  Rosa was living with her brother Michel in the 1900 census, and married Bryan C. Woodruff in 1903.

Obituary:  Opelousas Courier (Opelousas, LA), 8 March 1890:  Died – At his residence, in Plaisance, March 2, 1890, Nolle Pierre Pitre, aged 52 years, a month and 2 days.  Mr. Pitre was one of our best citizens.  He was a worthy scion of an old Creole family whose ancestors were cruelly driven away from Canada by the English, and illustrated in his well-spent life many of the sterling virtues which distinguished these hardy pioneers who settled here when Louisiana was yet a wilderness.  We extend our sincere condolence to his bereaved family.

Misc. Notes:

- 27 April 1889, Opelousas Courier (LA):  A few days ago we formed one of a party who seined Durio Lake, and a capital time we all had of it.  Mr. Nolle Pitre, whose hospitable residence is situated near the lake, placed his large seine at our disposal with permission to draw it in the lake.  Mr. Jos. Boagni had brought out his wagon with a number of his hands, and under his supervision a barrel of fish was soon caught.  There was an ample supply of nice fish to take home by all who were present.  Crayfish and turtles were very scarce.  Moccasin snakes made things lively sometimes, and often two or three large ones would be caught at a single haul of the seine.  Quite a number of large bullfrogs were also caught.  Owing to the great destruction of small fish, left on the banks by some thoughtless people, Mr. Pitre will be particular as to whom he gives permission to seine the lake in future.  We enjoyed a splendid fish and crayfish dinner with our hospitable friend, and returned home delighted with our trip.

- 18 October 1890, Opelousas Courier (LA):  Sale of estate of Estelle Pitre – by tutors Diomel Durio & Lelia Pitre: 9 head of gentle horned stock, one gentle work ox, 9 gentle creole work mules, one creole sorrel mule, one black creole horse, one sorrel creole mule, one black creole mare, one 3-year-old creole filly, one bay mare and colt, one sorrel creole mare and colt, one gentle creole work horse, one gentle sorrel mare, one gentle gray mare, one gentle sorrel mare and colt, 3 gentle creole colts, 51 head of sheep, one 2-horse wagon, 2 ox carts, one branding iron, etc.
