Notes for Louis Constant Pitre:
Louis-Constant's Acadian family had arrived in St. Malo, France from Miquelon on 13 November 1767 on the schooner La Creole. Louis-Constant was born in Poitiers c1774. On 15 November 1775 the family were in the 2nd Convoy leaving Chatellerault for Nantes, which included his mother and 3 siblings. His father Olivier was listed but did not make the voyage. It is likely he died in Chatellerault before sailing.
Ten years later, 1785, the family boarded L'Amitie
bound for Louisiana. The family now consisted of Constant, his widowed
mother Marie Moyse, and two siblings. Only Constant is found
with his mother in the 1788 & 1791 Lafourche censuses, his two sisters
having married. Constant is listed with his wife Marie in
the 1798 Lafourche census with a 7x15 arpent plot.
The 1810 Lafourche census has Constant Pitre as the head of a household. No other names are listed, but by ages, the other members would appear to be his wife Marie Rose Guidry, 3 children, and his mother. The 1820 census now indicates Constant & Marie with 4 children.
The Louisiana Conveyancing Records (Terrebonne Genealogical Society -
online) show that on 22 October 1822 Louis Constant Pitre sold land to
Henry S. Thibodaux to wit; Land situate on Bayou Darbonne, alias Terrebonne,
containing 640 Superficial acres of land, No. 586 of land office records bounded
above and below by lands of Henry S. Thibodaux. Witnessed by Bernard
Edouard Hains and Leandre N. Crochet. Recorder 26 May 1825: 'In
year 1802, when country was under Spanish Government and when I fulfilled the
functions of Alcayde or Syndie for county of Lafourche, Act of abandonment,
Constant Pitre, Laurent St. Joseph Pishoff and Pierre Dufresne, having been
entirely satisfied they have ceded and abandoned to Mr. Henry S. Thibodaux,
to belong to him in full ownership lands they acquired by concession from
Spanish Government, I delivered the Certificate to be used as needed November
15, 1820. Signed Daspit, Judge.'
