Notes for Eva Pitre:

Obituary:  Clarion News (Opelousas, LA), Thursday, 6 November 1930:  Buggy Demolished as Mule is Unhurt - Mrs. Henry Pitre's Head Crushed in Tragedy Wednesday Afternoon - Mrs. Henry Pitre, 37, died a few minutes after her body was hurled 60 feet by Missouri-Pacific Fast Passenger Train 5 as it struck the buggy in which she was riding at 2:25 Wednesday afternoon.  Lillian and Atile Deville, two young sisters, miraculously saved their lives by jumping from the buggy just before the train crash.  The trio had been in Opelousas shopping and were returning home.  They came to the railroad crossing two miles west of Opelousas and did not see the train in time to avoid the tragedy.  Mrs. Pitre's body was hurled along the track about sixty feet by the impact.  Her head was crushed and bones broken.  The buggy was hurled against a cattle gap and destroyed as it fell in a nearby ditch.  The mule pulling the buggy escaped injury and ran west.  Mrs. Pitre is the mother of seven children, one, a young baby.  It was the first time she had left the infant and was on the way home at the time.  The family, well-to-do planters reside in Prairie Ronde.  The Missouri-Pacific engineer stopped the train and members of the crew attempted to take Mrs. Pitre to the Sanitarium but she died a few minutes before arrival at the hospital.  She did not gain consciousness before the end.
