MISC:
- 10 December 1831 Land Purchase Certificate: Charles Francois Pitre of the County of Opelousas, has paid in full for Lot #2, section 4, township 6, south of range 3 east in Opelousas, containing 37 acres and 6/100 of an acre. Signed (25 March 1833) President Andrew Jackson
- 25 February 1835 - The will of Charles' first wife, Catherine Vige, listed her five children as Celeste and Irma, Charles, Jr., Louis Charles, and Lisie wife of Jean Baptiste Roy. It stated that the family lived on a plantation on Grand Pointe du Moyz.
- Descendant Lynda DeBlieux Hlywiak has posted a significant amount of information online re Charles Francois Pitre and his second wife Sydalise Francoise Derossier. I have extracted some of that information which appears below:
- 2 June 1838 - Sidalise Derosier, wife of Placide Miller, filed a petition with the court for a divorce. She stated that they have been married for 11 years, but a few months after the marriage her husband abandoned her to live with Nancy Moore, by whom he now has several children. Her husband denied all. Suit found in her favor and divorce granted. (Sydalise had four children by Miller.)
- Two months later Sydalise married Charles
Francois Pitre. Their first son Leon was born 3 months later.
- 16 September 1843 - Charles Pitre filed suit against Sydalise.
He stated that he 'always treated his said wife with property and furnished her with all the conveniences and comforts of
life that were reasonably within his power', that 'she has turned out to be of a (disobedient?) and immoral character; that she is a common slut; that she is of
argumentative and disobedient disposition; and has in various instances misbehaved towards your petitioner and has ill treated him, that she has committed adultery and other misdeeds which render intolerable their living together any longer.'
Charles asked for custody of his minor children. (About December 1842, about 16 months after the birth of Charles and Sydalise's 3rd son, Sydalise
gave birth to an apparently illegitimate son. Arvillien DeRossier was baptised
4 June 1843 at the age of six months at the Opelousas Church, no father listed,
Sydalise is listed as mother.)
- 2 December 1843 - Sydalise answered the petition by denying the
allegations. She 'says that she has not been guilty of any infidelity as a wife to the Plaintiff, on the contrary, she alleges, that the Plaintiff is wanting in affection towards her, and has
--- never touched her, with that attention and kindship, which her own good conduct towards him, ought have justified. That he has frequently encouraged his servants to be insolent and disobedient towards, to insult her, and disobey such commands, as she has a right to give them.'
- 14 December 1843 - Evidence from V. Joubert Senior: He stated
that he has known her for some time and 'doesn't know that she had any improper
--- with any other man since she was married.' Antoine Ledoux Senior
said he has known her for six years and 'doesn't know of her committing
adultery.' Francois Poupon fils said he knows her and 'doesn't know of her having committed
adultery.' (Two others, names illegible, said they don't know of her having committed adultery.)
Charles asked for the suit to be dismissed. The Court refused.
- 16 December 1843 - The Court stated that the law and the 'evidence being in favor of the Defendant and against the Plaintiff'. The divorce was granted, Charles had to pay costs and got custody of his sons.
- Filed 28 December 1846 - The succession of Charles Pitre: Jean Baptiste Roy was named as administrator. Charles declared that he divorced Sydalise about three years prior because of her 'misconduct.' Charles retained custody of their three children: Leon Charles, Carmelien, and Pierre. Children of Charles and his first wife, Catherine Vige, were Charles Jr, Lisi wife of Jean Baptiste Roy, Celeste, widow of Auguste LeDoux, who later married Augustin Jeansonne, and Irma. He lived in Prairie Plaquemine, property bounded on the north by Auguste Jeansonne, and on the west by Charles Pitre.
- 1 February 1847 - After the death of Charles, Sydalise filed another petition: 'she was formerly married to one Charles Pitre Senior of the aforesaid Parish, and has by him three children: Leon Pitre, Carmilien Pitre, and Pierre Pitre, who are minors; that after the birth of said children she was divorced from her said husband, and he was intrusted with the guardianship of said minors, that Charles Pitre Sr. lately departed this life, and said minors are now under the care of petitioner as their natural tutorship but that no undertutor has yet been appointed to them.' She requests that her tutorship be confirmed and that an undertutor be appointed.' Granted.
