Misc.:  La sentinelle de Thibodaux (LA), Saturday, 3 October 1896:  The suit of Ferdinand Pitre vs. Pierre Bourgeois came to an abrupt termination last Monday after hearing the first witness.  It was an action in slander for having circulated the cruel rumor that plaintiff and his family were afflicted with leprosy.  On opening the case the defendant admitted of record that neither the plaintiff nor any member of his family was afflicted with the loathsome disease.  When the main witness was put on the stand Monday he failed to substantiate the charge that defendant had originated or circulated the unfortunate rumor; whereupon Messrs. Knobloch & Son, of counsel for plaintiff, arose and stating that the object of the suit, namely, to establish the falsity of the rumor, had been attained, moved to discontinue proceedings, which was allowed by the court.  The whole matter exhibits in its worst light the unfortunate habit of tattling to which some people are addicted and demonstrates once more how an inconsiderate remark, unfounded in truth, may work irreparable injury to some innocent person.  The result of the suit establishes the falsity of the cruel report but who can compensate the plaintiff and the members of his family, all honorable people, for the anguish of mind, mortification and humiliation to which they were subjected?  The Sentinel knows and esteems Mr. Ferdinand Pitre as an upright gentleman and good citizen and is glad to have the opportunity to publish to the world that the insidious report circulated about him has been proven to be absolutely without truth.
