Notes for Jacques Perioux:
- Jacques Perioux was born in France c1730 and came to Louisiana as a French soldier. In 1753 he married Anne Barbay, the daughter of another French soldier who had sent for his wife and family after his own discharge. Jacques was discharged on 1 June 1754 and with his new wife settled in the St. Charles area of the colony. On 6 March 1762 he obtained title to a farm on the east bank of the Miss. R. in St. John the Baptist parish. By the June 1766 census of St. John, he is shown owning several farm animals and 1770 he was producing corn and rice. He died quite young in 1771 and his widow married Francois Clement four years later.
Notes for Anne Barbay:
- Second husband Francois Clement was born Abt. 1737 in Chamberi, Savoie, France, and died Abt. 1787 at Edgard, St. John, LA. They were married 20 October 1772 at Edgard, St. John, LA
- Francois Clement bought the Perioux farm on 12 May 1776. On 20 August 1781 Louis Barbay, uncle of the children & Anne's brother, petitioned that the children's inheritance be taken from the custody of Francois Clement as he had spent part of it and put the children out of the house. The children were living with their oldest brother Leonard. On 20 November 1804, again widowed, Anne Barbay requested a sale of certain movable and immovable property so that she could effect a settlement with her children. The 5 arpent farm on the left bank about 27.5 miles above N.O. sold for $550 to Pierre Becnel. The sale grossed $2770. On 7 April 1805, the sale of the animals grossed $254. (Cost of the sale $106, auctioneer's fee $5.) Anne brought $442 from her first marriage to Perillou and her dowry was $100. These amounts were to be deducted from the total before partition.
