Notes for Louis Dantin:
- Louis Dantin was born in Quebec c1745, the son of French immigrant parents. In 1752 they were residents of Port Toulouse on Isle Royale. During the deportation, only Louis and his brother Barthelemy survived the voyage to France. They arrived at St. Malo on 17 November 1758 on the ship 'La Reine d'Espagne.' Louis lived in St. Tual until 1766, near Becherel the following year, and then St. Andre des Eaux where he married 20-year-old Jeanne Gesmier (a Frenchwoman) in 1767. Twins and two sons were born there, but only Florien and Jeanne (a twin) survived. Daughter Marie was born in Chatellerault in 1774, and these 5 (Louis, wife Jeanne, Jeanne, Florien, & Marie) were in the Third Convoy leaving Chatellerault for Nantes on 7 December 1775. Three more daughters were born to them in Nantes and wife Jeanne died c1783, probably in childbirth as she was only 37. Louis remarried in 1784 to 38-year-old Helene Aucoin, the widow of Alexis Doiron. She had at least 2 children with her, and this gave Louis' half-dozen minor children a mother, enabling him to carry on carpentry work. They made the trip to LA on L'Amitie, leaving France on 20 August 1785 and arriving on 8 November 1785. They were listed as Louis Dantin house carpenter 38, wife Elene 37, Jeanne 16, Marie 12, Anne 9, Julie 7, Francoise Doiron 17 & Marie Doiron 12 (Helene's 2 daughters). Louis received an axe, a medium axe, a shovel, a hatchet, a knife, and three hoes. They moved to Ascension where unfortunately Helene died the following summer. The next summer Louis married again, this time to a much younger woman Marguerite Breau, who was only 22 to Louis' 42 years. She gave him another 10 children. He was about 81 when he died and the Dantins of LA descend from him.
