Notes for Jean Louis Fonteneau:
- Jean Louis Fonteneau left France in 1720 aboard the ship Drommadaire as a sergeant sent on assignment to the colonies. The seat of government for the extensive Louisiana territory and the French military headquarters was based at Mobile. Fonteneau was originally assigned to Fort Conde. In 1726 he married a young widow, Louise Angelique Henry. They resettled about 300 miles upriver from Mobile at Fort Toulouse. (Descendants have placed a memorial at this spot.)
They raised a family there until Jean Louis died in 1755. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 gave England all the French territory east of the Mississippi except for New Orleans and its surrounding area. Many of the French families went first to New Orleans in early January 1764 and then were sent on to Pointe Coupee. Most stayed there only a little while before moving on to the newly established Opelousas post.
