Ralph Smith was born Abt. 1692 at Hopton, Derbyshire, England, and died Abt. 1753 at Alsop-en-le-Dale, Derbyshire.  

 

Wife Mary Yates was born Abt. 21 September 1697 at Derby, Derbyshire (baptism: 21 September 1697 St. Werburgh, Derby), and died 4 September 1748 at Alsop-en-le-Dale Manor, Derbyshire.  Burial: Alsop-en-le-Dale churchyard.  They were married 22 April 1714 at St. Werburgh, Derby, Derbyshire. 

 

 

Their children were:

 

1- Mary Smith  b: Abt. 22 May 1715 at Alsop-en-le-Dale, Derbyshire (baptism: 22 May 1715 Alsop-en-le-Dale)

 

2- Margaret Smith  b: Abt. 27 June 1716 at Alsop-en-le-Dale, Derbyshire (baptism: 27 June 1716 Alsop-en-le-Dale)

 

3- John Smith  b: Abt. 1720, and died 21 November 1776 at Alsop-en-le-Dale, Derbyshire.  

            +Mary Manners b: Abt. 1720, and died 14 September 1774 at Alsop-en-le-Dale, Derbyshire.  They were married 11 June 1750 in St. Werburgh, Derby, Derbyshire.

           

 

Notes for Ralph Smith:

- 1711: Alsop Hall sold to the Smiths of Hopton (bought from Robert Millward); resold it 40 years later to Pole of Nottingham.

- Excerpt of probate document of Robert Millward proved March 11, 1712/13:

First I give & devise all my messuages lands ____ & ____ with the ___________ in Alsop in the Dale aforesaid unto John Beresford of Ashborne in the said County Esq. & John Port of Ilam in the county of Stafford Esq. and ____ heires and assignes forever in trust nevertheless that ____ or that survive of them his heires or assignes do and shall convey & assure the same and every part thereof unto Ralph Smith of Hopton in the said county of Derby go-d and his heirs and assignes for such consideration & at such time and by such ways and means as are mentioned ________ and approved in and by _____ Articles of Agreement for that purpose lately made betwixt me and the said Ralph Smith.  And my further will and mind is that the said John Beresford and John Port or the survivor of them his heires or assignes shall at the time or times in the said Articles for that purpose mentioned receive of the said Ralph Smith or his assigns the said overall ____ of consideration money for the said ______ and therewith and there----- with my _____ estate in the first place pay and discharge all my just debts that I shall owe at the time of my decease insofar as the sum will amount unto. And the remainder that _____ be disposed of as follows. ......In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the seven & twentieth day of September in the year of our Lord 1711. Grant by Sir Philip Gell, to Ralph Smith of Alsop, John Tomlinson the elder of Parwich John Tomlinson the younger, Francis Tomlinson of Hopton and George Tomlinson his son - whereas Eleanor Alsop, decd, widow of Anthony Alsop, did put into Gell's hands £50 and asked him to pay her interest thereon and asked that upon her death he would put the same to pious uses - of a rent charge of 30s a year issuing from a close at Carsington called Nearer Meadow Furlong (1½ acre) in the tenure of John Herold, lately purchased of Thomas Bayley and Anne his wife, and from a close called New Close, in the tenure of Robert Needham, lately purchased from Anthony Rippen, upon trust for the preaching of 10 sermons yearly in the church at Alsop en le Dale by such ministers as Gell and his heirs shall appoint, with proviso that if ever the protestant religion be replaced in England by popery, then the money to be divided yearly among the poor of Alsop until such time as the protestant religion be restored 2 Apr.

Marriage Entry:  Mr. Ralf Smith of Alsop-in-the-Dale & Mrs. Mary Yates, St. Werburgh's, All Saints Parish, 22 April 1714.

 

Alsop was a chapelry of Ashbourne church and Alstonefield is just over the border into Staffordshire.
