- The Dept. of Archives and History in Alabama has a very brief sheet of paper relating to John Richardson.  It says he was an Ensign, 7th Marengo Blues, Indian War, 1833.  This is from a letter to Gov. C.C. Clay from E.N. Glovin, dated Demopolis, 3 March 1836.

- Obituary, The Athens Herald (Athens, AL), Friday, 4 July 1856:  Died - At his residence in this place on 29th inst., John M. Richardson, long a resident of Athens.

Tombstone Inscription:  Athens City Cemetery, Athens:  In Memory / of / John M. Richardson / born in Sullervan co. Tenn. / July 24, 1795 died in Athins / Ala. June 30, 1856 Aged 60 / years 11 months & 6 days.

- The Athens Post (Athens, AL), Friday, 21 July 1876:  Article entitled Old Times about Athens includes the following:  John M. Richardson, lived then where 'Trinity school' is now located; he was a quiet unpretending man; he died, and was buried here; he had a family of noble sons and lovely and accomplished daughters - aunt Polly, his companion, was all goodness of heart and sincerity of purpose; after the death of her children she moved to Mississippi, and there married Sam'l Redus who once lived here; after his death she went to New Orleans and lived for several years with her noble and gallant son Capt. John Richardson, one of the most honored and respected citizens of that city, and she now lives in Texas.  John once lived with me, he applied to me for a situation, wearing a long frock blue blanket coat, and was not ashamed of it, thought more of making a good name than fine clothes.  Today, I doubt not, he is one of the neatest dressed men in the fashionable Crescent City, and his character for honesty, sobriety and high business capacity in full keeping with his wardrobe; he was brought up to business when it took 100 cents to make a dollar, now it only requires 87 1/2 in greenbacks, but John Richardson is all of 100 cents today of a true and good man.  Harriet the oldest daughter, married Dr. W. H. Yarbrough, Margaret died here as did William and George, Lou, the youngest, and one of the most lovely and beautiful girls I ever saw, was thrown from a horse when just starting from home to take an evening ride with a young gentleman, and was instantly killed; subsequently Mrs. Yarbrough died, and the father sons and daughters now form a sacred group in our cemetery with a suitable and appropriate evidence of love and affection to mark their long resting place.

Notes for Mary Ann Keyes:

- 2nd husband - widower Col. Samuel Redus (b. 1 May 1797 Wythe Co., VA; d. 27 February 1870 Martinsville, Copiah, MS; burial Ellington-Redus Cem.; m. 27 October 1862 Gallatin, Copiah, MS).  About 1872 Mary Ann moved to Texas with her youngest son.

- Athens Post (15 April 1880) [From 'The Enlightening Eighties' compiled & published by Faye Acton Axford, extracted by James Croley Smith]: Mrs. Sam Redus (Aunt Polly Richardson) was in town.  She was the mother of the gallant Major John B. Richardson of New Orleans, one of the commanders of the famous Washington Artillery, and of James W. Richardson of San Antonio.  These were all that were left of the once large family that lived in Athens where Trinity School stood in 1880. (7 December 1881): The building of the Trinity Hall, the colored school building now in process of erection, will soon necessitate the removal of the old frame building now in front and to the west of it.  This house is an old landmark.  In it was born the distinguished soldier whose career will reflect undying honor on the town of Athens, Col. John B. Richardson, Lt. Col. of the world famed Washington Artillery of New Orleans, now one of the most honored and beloved citizens of that city.  Many pleasant memories are cherished of delightful gatherings in that hospitable home.  And, too, one of the saddest tragedies our town ever knew...when one of the most beautiful girls in our section, Lou Richardson, died. (19 May 1881): A dedication of the monument to General Stonewall Jackson in the Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans by the Louisiana Division of the Association of the Army of Northern Virginia was held.  General Fitzhugh Lee spoke and Athens' native, John B. Richardson, president of the Association, received the monument with a beautiful address.  His speech is printed in this issue.  (14 December 1882): Mrs. Mary A. Redus, mother of Col. John B. Richardson, died at the New Orleans home of her son on December 6th.

- Obituary:  Times Picayune:  RICHARDSON - On Wednesday, December 6, 1882 at 4 o'clock P.M., Mrs. M. A. Richardson, a native of Virginia, aged 82 years.  The funeral will take place from the residence of her son, Col. John B. Richardson, No. 247 Felicity Street, this (Thursday) Afternoon at 3 o'clock.  The friends of the family are invited to attend.
