- South London Chronicle, Saturday, 11 September 1880:  The Accident to a Bermondsey Excursion Party - On Saturday, Mr. Payne, coroner for Southwark, held an inquiry at Guy's Hospital into the circumstances attending the death of Mrs. Annie Gargery, aged 54, late of Abbey street, Bermondsey, which was caused, it was alleged, through the drunkenness of the driver of a pleasure brake.  Eliza Gargery, living at 73, Abbey street, Bermondsey, deposed that deceased was her mother, who was the wife of Samuel Gargery, a leather dresser.  On Monday, the 30th ult., they went with an excursion party, which left the Glowworm Tavern, in Abbey street, at 10 a.m. to go to Sutton-at-Hone.  Witness was in the first brake and deceased was in the second, the driver of which she did not know by name.  At Eltham the vehicles separated, and when they arrived at the Beehive, witness and her sister, in consequence of what they had been told, ran back some distance and found deceased lying on the road insensible.  James Darbyshire, son of the proprietor of the Glowworm, stated that he sat next to the driver of the vehicle which was overturned.  Deceased was sitting in the body of the brake.  A man named James White was the driver; he seemed sober when they started.  They halted for about half-an-hour at Lee.  Upon reaching the Old Road, White galloped his horses and endeavoured to pass the other brake, and then suddenly fell off the box.  The reins fell upon the backs of the horses, and about 40 yards further on the vehicle came in collision with a butcher's cart, and overturned both the cart and the break, throwing all the people into the road.  Deceased was discovered to be insensible, and she was at once removed on to the bank.  Just before the accident witness had been playing a flute; but that did not cause the driver to fall.  After the accident, witness noticed that the driver looked drunk.  Joseph Chapman, living at 6, St. George's place, Bermondsey, stated that the driver started racing with the other vehicle before they left the Kent road.  Witness did not see the driver enter the Tiger's Head at Lee, but he got down while they stayed.  Shortly after they had again started, White said that the break was too crowded, and then he noticed that he was rather the worse for drink.  Going down the hill witness asked White to put the skid on, but he replied, "No, Bill hadn't got one on, nor would he."  In witness's opinion, White fell in consequence of the drink he had taken.  Mr. White, house surgeon at Guy's Hospital, stated deceased when admitted was suffering from a wound in the head and fractured skull.  Death was the result of laceration of the brain, and haemorrhage at the pit of the brain.  The Coroner having summed up, the jury returned a verdict of accidental death, but added that there was some carelessness on the part of the driver.
