- Mathurin Pitre was born in America, in what was at that time the Louisiana territory.  His birth and baptism in 1802 were recorded in Spanish as the Spaniards held the territory.  (Louisiana became a state in 1812.)  As the fifth of six sons born to Martin Benonie Pitre and Jeanne Dantin, life was probably difficult.  He was 29 when he eventually married Felicite Thibodeau (daughter of Aubin Benoni Thibodeau and Eugenie Hebert), who was actually only three months past her 14th birthday.  They were issued a marriage license, though they gave their ages as 21 and 15 respectively.  They went on to have nine children over their twenty-year marriage.  Two years before his death the Lafourche census showed him as a farmer owning $3000 worth of land.  He was illiterate, as were many of the Acadian descendants, but his children attended school.  Mathurin died at the age of 50 in 1852.  Three months after Mathurin's death his widow Felicite filed a claim to be appointed tutor to their seven remaining children, Jean and Banon had both died as infants.  She was granted tutorship (a form of legal guardianship) and her father was appointed under tutor.
