Pension application:
- 18 June 1900: Leandre D. Pitre applied for a soldier's pension.
He stated that he was born in the parish of Lafourche in 1840. He enlisted
at Thibodaux in April 1861 in Co. E, Lafourche Guards, 4th LA Regt. of Inf.
He stated that he was never wounded. He was a prisoner in Camp Chase, Ohio
from the 16th or 17th day of December 1864 until paroled when the war was over.
At time of application he was married and had 9 children: wife 49, children 32,
29, 27, 25, 24, 22, 20, 18, 13 (3 boys, 6 girls). He was not engaged in
any business nor did he or his wife own any real estate. "Have earned
support for self and family by common labor, plantation field hand." Old
age and infirmities due to exposure and hard labor were preventing him from
earning a living at this time. He did not use liquor.
- 28 February 1902: Applied for pension. Same answers, now has
rheumatism. Pension allowed $2.75 quarterly. The Lafourche
Sheriff/Tax Collector provided a personal reference: "Dear Sir and Comrade, I
sent you some five days ago an application for a pension for an old comrade of
mine and one whom I think deserves it as he was as true as they made them and he
is now crippled with rheumatism. And while he tries to make a living he
can not make both ends meet and as for his children doing anything to help him
it is out of the question as they are common laborers and earn about 60 to 75
cents per day. So if you do anything to help him I would appreciate it."
