Notes for Marie Juvenile Chatigny:

- She remarried to Cyril Morin on 7 August 1895 in Rhode Island.

- The Evening Bulletin (Providence, RI), Monday, 14 October 1895:  Wants Her Child - Mrs. Morin Petitions the Supreme Court for Writ of Habeas Corpus - Gave her in care of Louis Gauthier in Canada - Says she is now able to care for her daughter but possession is refused - The matter held by the Court for Advisement:  The petition of Juvenile Morin for a writ of habeas corpus to issue against Louis Gauthier and wife of Providence, to compel the surrender up to the petitioner her child, Ernestine Pitre, was heard in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court this morning.  The child, who is about 11 years of age, is a child of a former marriage to one Vital Pitre.  Mrs. Morin testified that she had left the child in the custody of the respondents some few years ago in Canada while she was on a visit.  She did not give the respondents to understand that she delivered up the possession of the child.  On cros-examination she admitted to attorney Cosgrove, who appeared for the respondents, that she served time in a Canadian jail for illegal selling of liquor.  Edward S. Stimson testified that he had visited the home of the petitioner and found it a good, comfortable home.  Patrone Pitre, a daughter of the petitioner, corroborated the previous witness.  The court thereupon took a recess until 2:15 p.m.  When court reassembled testimony was introduced to show that the child had a happy home and its interests would be best served by permitting it to stay where it is.  The matter was held for advisement.

- The Evening Bulletin (Providence, RI), Tuesday, 15 October 1895:  Foster Parents Win - Juvenile Morin refused the custody of her child:  The petition of Juvenile Morin for a writ of habeas corpus was denied by the Supreme Court today, the following rescript being handed down:  Juvenile Morin vs. Louis Gautier et ux.  The petitioner, a sister of the respondent, Mrs. Gautier, about four years ago, when a widow and burdened with the care and support of four other children, gave the child Ernestine Pitre to the respondents to be brought up by them as their own child.  The respondents had no children of their own, and since that time the child, Ernestine Pitre, has lived with them and has been cared for and supported by them as their own child.  A strong affection has grown up between the child and her foster parents, and she is happy and contented in the home which they have provided.  In these circumstances we do not think that the best interests of the child will be subserved by taking her from their custody and delivering her to the petitioner.  We, therefore, decide that her custody shall remain with the respondent.  We think, however, that the petitioner should be allowed to visit the child, or that the child should be permitted to visit her, at reasonable times; and we enjoin upon both the petitioner and the respondents the duty and necessity of encouraging instead of repressing the feelings of affection which the child ought to entertain for her mother on the one hand, and her foster parents on the other.

Obituaries for the children:

Petronille Pitre:  MISC - Pawtucket Times (Pawtucket, RI), Monday, 1 October 1900:  Particulars have just been gleaned of a case of disappearance which, is, to say the least, in all respects remarkable.  While employed in a desirable situation possessed of a comfortable home and a temperate disposition; and, as the saying is, "with not a trouble in the world" worth calling such - a resident of this city has suddenly vanished from the sphere of family and friends and left behind not a clue to his whereabouts, nor even a reason for his departure.  Furthermore, as his absence has extended over several days, it is giving rise to serious forebodings.  The name of the missing man is Arthur Roberts and his home is at 56 Middle street, where his young wife - for he was married less than two years ago - anxiously awaits news of him.  Mrs. Roberts claims to be utterly unable to suggest an adequate reason for her husband's strange disappearance, and, unless a trivial matrimonial 'tiff' be regarded as reasonable cause for so grave an action, the story she tells is certainly devoid of any suggestion which could tend to enlightenment.  The last time she saw her husband was on Wednesday night at 7:45 o'clock, and during the succeeding five days, up to date, he has been as if dead to her and, apparently to all who knew him in this city.  For the past two years he has been employed as a silk weaver by the Royal Weaving Company in Central Falls, and throughout that time he has borne the reputation of steadiness and sobriety.  This estimate of Mr. Robert's character is amply corroborated by his wife and friends, and Mrs. Roberts adds, moreover, that there could be no foundation for assuming that he was the victim of financial worries, for he had never to her knowledge and firm belief, risked money in speculative or other unprofitable channels of diversion.  The 'tiff' referred to must, therefore, despite its trivialness, be accepted as a 'good and sufficient' cause in lieu of a better, for it immediately preceded Mr. Robert's departure on Wednesday evening last.  According to his wife's statement it consisted merely of the 'few words' which are said to occasionally vary the matrimonial amenities of even the best-regulated household; but, brief though the oral exchange is said to have been, its climax seems to indicate it as the 'motif' of the disappearance, for the male participant in the exchange is said to have irrevocably closed the argument by quitting the house, taking with him, it is also alleged, some $7 in an old pocket book.  His non-return gave rise to fears which were not allayed the next night by the news that his place at the mill was vacant, and, though inquiries have been made to acquaintances here and elsewhere, his wife still remains without a trace of his whereabouts.  The missing man is 5 feet 5 1/2 inches in height, about 20 years of age, has black hair, dark brown eyes and slight moustache.  On leaving home he wore a soft light grey hat with black band, black coat and vest, with gold watch and chain, light grey pants, brown shoes, black socks, red and white striped shirt and black green-figured bow.
