- Louis Pitre (Peters) was a carpenter by trade, but like many others in those times he was a jack of all trades.  He fished, hunted, made decoys, made violins, and even made guns.  In 1904 Louis made a trip west to Seattle to visit his son Edward and family.  While there he helped Eddie build a home in the Ravenna district of Seattle.  [contributed by Jim Hoy]

MISC:  Detroit Evening News (Detroit, MI), Friday, 5 September 1941:  After 11 years' residence in Belgium, Walter Peters, 45-year-old carpenter, is back in his native Detroit.  He hopes to stay.  In those 11 years Peters lived in Brussels, the home of his wife.  He came to love Belgium, and saw his nine-year-old son, Matthew, grow to manhood.  He saw Belgium happy and secure in the belief that she could defend herself.  Then, in a few short weeks, he saw the Nazis come.  He saw Brussels bombed, and watched his wife fall ill and die.  Said Peters today at the home of his mother, Mrs. Adeline Peters, of 2270 Holcomb avenue: "There is only one way to defeat Hitler - that is with food and materials.  His armies cannot be stopped, but starvation can do what machine guns and tanks cannot.  Everybody knows that Europe is starving.  My son and I lived last winter for four months on only turnips and rudabagas.  That gives you an idea.  There was no milk at any price for my dying wife.  Children cried from hunger.  There was little bread, and flour is gray, without nourishment.  Everybody is concerned with one desperate worry - food.  Heat is a problem.  But people huddle together.  Food they must have, a little of it anyway.  On the 'marche noir,' the 'black market,' butter is $5 a pound.  There wasn't a can of sardines in Brussels at any price.  Eggs?  A memory.  Fruit, vegetables, meat are an illusion, a memory of other days.  There is no gasoline for automobiles.  Soon there will be no tires for bicycles.  The harvest?  You can judge where that goes.  Everything is rationed, even the pitiful produce of a kitchen garden.  It is not the property of the owner anymore.  There is so much I would say, but it is not wise.  There are reprisals.  But bear this in mind, food is the key.  And as long as there is any food in Europe, the Germans will have what there is."  German soldiers in Brussels, he said, behaved circumspectly.  Residents were not bothered if they obeyed the rationing laws and did not take part in sabotage.  He added with a grim smile: "Here, when I sit down to a dinner at my mother's abundant table, I find I can not eat.  There are memories which are too painful."
