Dorothy S. Pete: Coroner's Inquiry, Seattle Daily Times, Thursday, 27 August 1931: Responsibility for further investigation into the death of Mrs. Dorothy Coleman, 22-year-old mother, at St. Luke's Hospital after an illegal operation performed before she reached the hospital, rested upon the prosecuting attorney's office today. Unable to fix blame upon any of the several witnesses examined yesterday, a coroner's jury last evening returned a verdict finding merely that Mrs. Coleman died as a consequence of the operation. Testimony indicated the young woman's condition might have been brought about by herself. Drs. Carl Hoffman and John Wetherspoon testified they had been called to the maternity home conducted by Mrs. Margaret A. Parsons at 1001 W. Ray St. and had found Mrs. Coleman in such critical condition they sent her to the hospital as a meningitis case, believing she was suffering from that malady. Mrs. Parsons said Mrs. Coleman had come to her suffering from the effects of an operation apparently self-performed.
