Louis Pitre: Burlington Weekly Free Press (VT), Thursday, 6 July 1911: Dead from Suffocation - End came to South Burlington Man while intoxicated - Burial services for Louis Peters of South Burlington were held Tuesday morning at nine o'clock at the grave in Mt. Calvary cemetery. Mr. Peters was found dead in the home of John Savoy of South Burlington at an early hour Sunday morning, following a night of intoxication. Health Officer H.H. Wheeler gives his opinion that death was due to suffocation originating from the effects of acute alcoholism. Mr. Peters had not lived with his wife for a number of years, and he has for some time been addicted to the use of liquor. As nearly as can be learned, the events leading up to the dead man's end were as follows: Saturday night he received his week's pay, amounting to $13. For his board he paid $3, and when he died he had $9 in his pocket. He left South Burlington between six and seven o'clock Saturday evening, for this city. Upon his return he entered Savoy's dooryard about eleven o'clock. He remained there until midnight or later. Then John Savoy, assisted by Frank Russell, carried him into the house and laid him upon a couch. About 3:30 Sunday morning he awoke. He had a bottle of alcohol and took another drink from it at this time. Some of the people in the house, who were up and about, tried to loosen Peter's collar, but he would not permit this, and they left him again. About seven o'clock they found him dead. He appeared to have fallen over in some way so that his face was buried in a soft mat, and death appeared to be due to suffocation, the body showing the usual discoloration common in such cases. There was no evidence of foul play. He had been in bad shape before this time, from drinking alcohol, and Sunday morning an empty alcohol bottle was found near him. Mr. Peters was about 50 years of age, and he is survived by his wife, Addie Peters of South Attleboro, Mass., by one daughter, Mrs. Emma Rice of Apponaug, R.I., and by a brother, Nelson Peters of this city, who conducts a barber shop at the corner of Elmwood avenue and Spring street.
Narcisse Celestin Pitre: Burlington Daily News (VT), Friday, 29 April 1921: Nelson Peters Drowns in Richelieu River - Well-Known Local Barber Had Been Missing from his home since Easter - News that Nelson Peters, for many years a well-known barber in this city, had been drowned in the Richelieu river was contained in a telegram received yesterday by the local police. Peters had been missing from his home since Easter Sunday. The telegram was sent by Langlois and company, undertakers of St. Johns, P.Q. The telegram contained no particulars of the accident but merely the words "Sorry to notify you that the body of Nelson Peters has been found in the Richelieu river, near here." It is known that Peters was in St. Johns about two weeks ago but no further information could be obtained regarding him, until his body was dragged from the river. Mr. Peters, toward the latter part of his life operated a barber shop at the corner of Spring street and Elmwood avenue. His family consisted only of himself and wife. Arrangements have been made for the removal of the body to Burlington for burial.
