Obituary: The Courier (Houma, LA), Wednesday, 29 April 1981: (photo) I. J. Pitre, 78, formerly the owner of the original I. J. Pitre Hardware and Supply store on East Main Street, died at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday. Mr. Pitre grew up in Golden Meadow and was initially a fisherman. In the early 1930s he became a salesman, working as the Lafourche Parish representative of Itzkovitch Furniture Co. of New Orleans. At the same time, he sold burial insurance for Falgout Funeral Home, working the route from Leeville to Raceland until 1945. In 1945, he decided to open a hardware store and chose Houma as a promising site. He ran the store for 20 years before selling it to his son Milton, who moved the store to its present location on East Main. His other son, Dr. Vernon Pitre, a former Houma Courier news editor and sports reporter, is presently the dean of the Graduate School at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux. Before his retirement, Mr. Pitre loved fishing, hunting and bowling. He was an active member and usher for Holy Rosary Catholic Church, and a member of the Holy Rosary Knights of Columbus Chapter No. 5535. Dr. Vernon Pitre said, "Daddy was a humanitarian. After his retirement, when Mother was sick, he took care of her for 10 years. He loved animals, too, and used to feed birds, cats and squirrels constantly." Mrs. Luke Savoie, his friend and neighbor for many years, said, "Mr. Pitre was a very charitable man and a good Christian who helped people in many ways. He used to give donations all the time to various organizations. He also used to bring the children at Wonderland Day Care Center little presents and things to eat around Easter and Christmas time. He was a very religious person, and very good to his wife, who was in a wheelchair for many years." Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. today at Chauvin Funeral Home, resuming 9 a.m. Thursday and continuing until funeral time. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with burial following at Terrebonne Memorial Park. Survivors include two sons, Milton Pitre of Houma, and Dr. Vernon Pitre of Thibodaux; three brothers, Harris Pitre of Houma, Maximillion Pitre of Lockport, and Felix Pitre of Cut Off; five sisters, Mrs. Lindsey (Victoria) Cheramie of Golden Meadow, Mrs. Andrew (Blanche) Hebert and Mrs. Laura Hill, both of Westwego, and Mrs. Elizabeth Callais and Mrs. Torres (Edna) Danos, both of Cut Off; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Gaspard Pitre; and his parents, Locadie Martin and Maximillion Pitre. Chauvin Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be from 5 to 10 p.m. today at Landry Funeral Home in Thibodaux. A graveside service and burial will be at Hillcrest cemetery in Goodman, Miss, at 2 p.m. Wednesday. A memorial service will be held at a later, undetermined date at First United Methodist Church in Thibodaux. He is survived by his wife, Ouida Boyette Pitre; one son, Dennis Pitre of Houma; two daughters, Jackie Lindsley of Thibodaux and Darlene Bergeron of Houma; one brother, Milton (Bob) Pitre; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, I. J. Pitre and Blanche Gaspard Pitre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Mr. Pitre was author of a weekly Courier article "Coffee Break"; he also authored several books. He volunteered at Laurel Valley Plantation and Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center. He was a member of the Terrebonne Parish Genealogy Society; and he was inducted into the American Cancer Society Hall of Fame.

71, a native of Cut Off and a resident of Houma, died at 2:40 p.m. Sunday, Jan.
2, 2011. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Chauvin Funeral Home
and from 9:30 a.m. to funeral time Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with burial in the
church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Dryden Pitre
of Houma; one son, Milton "Petey" Pitre Jr. and wife, Donna; two
daughters, Connie Pitre Chauvin and husband, Andy, and Melissa "Missy" Pitre
Price and husband, Jody; one brother, Gerald "Jerry" Caime and wife,
Beth; seven grandchildren, Kenny Price and wife, Sarah, Joey Price and
companion, Candice Chaisson, Scotty Price, Kyle Chauvin, Jeff Chauvin, Joshua
Comeaux and Tori Comeaux; and three great-grandchildren, Trent Price and
Kenna and Kara Price. He was preceded in death by his parents,
Ingance Joseph Pitre and Blanche Gespard Pitre; his
biological parents, Norbert Chabert and Argentina Delice' Chabert;
three brothers, Senator Leonard J. Chabert; Louis Chabert and Vernie Pitre;
and one sister, Lucy Caillais Leaycraft. He was the owner of
Pitre Hardware and Marine for 30 years and owner of American Marine and
Hardware. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He
lived for his family and loved his wife, children and grandchildren more than
anything. He was a great provider and outstanding husband, father,
grandfather, uncle, father-in-law and friend. He was always there for
anyone who needed him and no need was ever too big or small. He was
greatly loved by many and will be missed by all. Chauvin Funeral Home is
in charge of arrangements.
