Misc. notes:

- 5 May 1920, Ogdensburg Journal, Wednesday:  Joseph Arno was brought into court Tuesday by a warrant issued by Justice Alexander, the prisoner being charged by assault on his wife.  A fine of five dollars was imposed.

- 3 March 1921, Massena Observer, Thursday:  Keeper Asleep – Cash Stolen - IN LUNCH CAR SATURDAY MORNING - Hubert Lashomb Gave Shelter to a Couple of Strangers, Took a Nap and Lost About Eleven Dollars:  William Warner was taken to Canton Monday to await the action of the grand jury on a charge of third degree burglary and public intoxication committed here early Saturday morning and Sunday night respectively.  It is charged that Saturday morning about 3:00 o'clock he rifled the cash register in Guy Lashomb's lunch room on Center street, taking about eleven dollars and later broke into a repair shop operated by Hubert Shorette on the same street and there took two gold watches, admittance having been gained through the rear window.  Warner in company with John Finnegan entered the lunch room Friday night and as they had no place to stay asked Hubert Lashomb, who was taking care of the place at that time, if they could keep him company throughout the night, to which he consented.  Along toward two o'clock as business was getting dull Lashomb decided to take a little nap. He awoke about two hours later and found Finnegan dozing away but Warner in the meantime had left.  He thought little of this; and he went about his work.  Within a short time a customer came in and when he opened the cash register to make change he found the contents gone.  He immediately looked to Finnegan who had been there all night but he claimed he’d known nothing about it as he had been asleep all the time so the officers were notified.  Warner was looked up and taken in custody.  They were both given a hearing that same day but not enough evidence could be secured to convict them so they were discharged and both agreed to leave town at once.  Warner, however did not leave town but decided to go out and have a good time with the money taken from the lunch room so he set out Sunday night for the Grove where he took a number of drinks and soon started to get rough.  The officers were notified and Defoy and Sova were detailed to secure his arrest.  On searching him a watch was found which was identified as one of two stolen from Shorette's shop and a quantity of change was found hidden in his shoes.  The following day he waived examination and was held without bail for the grand jury.  William Shango was arrested by Officers Dennison and Demo Monday night and the following day faced a charge of public intoxication to which he pleaded guilty.  He was given the alternative of a forty day jail sentence or leaving town at once and he chose the latter.

- 11 July 1923, Courier and Freeman (Potsdam, NY):  Brasher Falls:  Hubert Lashomb and another man named Lalond, residents of Brasher Falls, but employed in Massena, were severely injured in an automobile accident five miles north of Winthrop on the evening of July 4th.  They were at once taken to the Hepburn Hospital in Ogdensburg, where they are under treatment.  Horace and Jerry Millmore, residents of Brasher Center were also injured in the accident, but their wounds are not considered serious.  The young men, all employed in Massena, were returning to that village after attending the Fourth of July celebration in Brasher when, the Chevrolet touring car driven by Jerry Millmore, suddenly left the highway, struck a telephone pole, cutting it off at the base, and then turned completely over, pinning the occupants beneath it.  They were finally released from the wrecked machine and Lashomb and Lalond taken to Hepburn Hospital.  The former's chest was lacerated and his body badly bruised.  Lalond also sustained severe abrasions about his body.  The nature of the Millmore brothers' injuries was less severe and they were able to proceed to Massena, where they are recovering at the boarding house conducted by Frank Ormsby, 61 Bishop avenue.  The Chevrolet was practically demolished and it was stated  that a thief, after stealing the battery from the mangled machine, set fire to it and it is now but a mass of twisted steel.

- 6 December 1923, Massena Observer:  Notice – My wife Margaret Arno, has left my home without just cause or provocation and I hereby forbid anyone trusting or harbouring her on my account after this date, December 3, 1923.  Joseph Arno, Massena, N.Y.

- 13 December 1923, Massena Observer, Thursday Triangle Affair aired in court – Charles Charlebois, 21, is taught a lesson – Judge lectures woman, whose husband finally gets her jail sentence suspended and gives her chance – Charles Charlebois, 21, charged with misdemeanour in interfering with the rights of a husband, has learned that it is a serious matter to go out with a married woman.  Because of his relations with Mrs. Margaret Arno, 27, wife of Joseph Arno and mother of five children, he received from Justice of the Peace Giles A. Chase last Thursday afternoon 30 days in jail and a fine of $25.  Jail sentence was suspended.  Mrs. Arno, charged with disorderly conduct and openly outraging public decency, was given a sentence of 30 days in jail but upon the plea of her husband this was suspended.  Charlebois admitted that he knew the woman was married.  Mrs. Arno claimed trouble with her husband.  During the hearing she wept most of the time.  Addressing her the judge said, “You were not born with a silver spoon in your mouth or an automobile under you.  Your husband has stood more from you and this man than he has to.”  Arno, pleading to have his wife’s sentence suspended, said that it would be her last chance but that he was willing to take her home.  There was a moment’s pause while Mrs. Arno decided between jail and home, but she chose the latter.  Charlebois, who is a Frenchman from a small town in Quebec, remained in jail over night.  Friday morning he was given considerable advice by the judge and after agreeing to keep away from Mrs. Arno his jail sentence was suspended.  The judge advised him to keep away from cheap dances, giving this same advice to Mr. And Mrs. Arno.  Charlebois paid his fine.

Gurley appeared as counsel for LaShomb.

- NOTES:   I can find no record that Hubert and Margaret were ever married to each other, legally.  While Leon claims Margaret as his mother, it is unclear regarding Pauline & Kenneth.  From the above information, it appears that Hubert took Leon with him when he returned to the marital home in August 1931 and that he was accepted into the family as Hubert's son.  Kenneth Lashomb & Pauline Lashomb are not mentioned in Hubert's 50th wedding anniversary item nor obituary.  Theresa Lashomb's (Slater) obit in 2014 does mention half-siblings Leon, Kenneth & Pauline.  Guy Lashomb's obit in 1980 mentions only Leon.
