MISC: Watertown Daily Times (Watertown, NY), Thursday, 4 May 1933: Massena, May 4 - Clifford St. Louis, 28, and Guy Lashomb, 17, both of West Hatfield street. narrowly escaped drowning in the Racket river about 9 last night when the boat they were fishing from capsized in the stream, which after the spring rains is swift and swollen. The two men were fishing about a mile and a half above the Main street bridge across the Racket river near the little rapids. The boat suddenly was caught by the current and started to rapidly fill with water. St. Louis was a good swimmer and struck out for shore. The younger man could not swim but finally was able to grasp the overturned boat. St. Louis with his heavy clothing and rubber boots finally made his way to shore but Lashomb, clinging to the boat, was carried rapidly down stream. His cries attracted the attention of residents of that section and Mrs. Charles E. Tyo, West Hatfield street, telephoned police headquarters for aid. Sergeant William F. Hankard went to Massena Springs and organized a searching party. In the meantime St. Louis had made his way to the Tyo home, exhausted by his battle with the river. Mayor Thomas S. Bushnell ordered the firemen out with a truck and lights to aid in recovering Lashomb, who all the time was floating down the river. He finally was able to pull himself on to the bottom of the boat which was overturned. After the boat had passed under the Main street bridge he attracted the attention of Fred Garceau, Lawrence Ashley and Ross Eagles who were fishing along the bank and they broke the chain which was attached to a nearby boat locking it to the shore and hurried out into the stream to his rescue. They overtook him and rescued him near the Aluminum company's railroad bridge about a half mile below the Main street bridge and about two miles below where the accident happened. When rescued Lashomb was exhausted from his battle with the cold water and his attempts to keep the boat from turning over with him. He was taken to his home.
