MISC: The Standard Journal (Stanstead, QUE), 21 September 1871: Notice is hereby given that I have relinquished to my son Xavier Lapete the remainder of his minority, and shall not claim his earnings or pay debts of his contracting after this date. Pierre Lapete, Standtead, Sept. 18, 1871.
- The Stanstead Journal (Stanstead, QUE), 11 February 1892: The Same Old Story - Xavier Lapete recently made another attack on his family, after freely imbibing from the "bowl," beating his children until their cries attracted people from the street. This time Lapete locked the door on his pursuers and escaped to Canada. He has now notified his wife, who has to support him and her children, that she must remove to Canada. It will be remembered that Mrs. Lapete, after being abused almost beyond endurance, did everything in her power to shield her husband from the officers who pursued him one night last fall. He was, however, captured on that occasion and taken to Newport, where the case came up for a hearing on the follow day. The prisoner was condemned to pay a heavy fine or go the house of correction. Many an honest man breathed the hope that the fine would not be paid, but generous hearted friends went forward with the money and rescued him from the clutches of the law. A husband's brutality and a wife's devotion could hardly be more forcibly illustrated than in this case. Mrs. Lapete is a hard-working woman and much sympathy is felt for her. It is hoped that the Canadian officers will at least be as alert to prevent the occurrence of any such brutalities here as were their brethren across the border. There are persons who object to allowing a man to pound even his own wife and children.
- Le Progres de l'Est (Sherbrooke, QUE), 14 April 1893: Stanstead - A man named Xavier Lepitre was arrested in Derby Line last Sunday and taken to Newport for his trial. Lepitre is a hard man who has no regard for his wife and who would like to see her working, whatever the weather, in health and in sickness. On Saturday, he had ingested a somewhat too large dose of diluted water and absolutely wanted to send his sick wife to work outside. He resorted to threats and assaults, the neighbors intervened and had him arrested. The magistrate before whom he appeared in Newport gave him twenty days in prison. On the same day, in the same place, the same magistrate sentenced a man named Joseph Fleury, from Beebe Plain, to the same penalty, for the same offense.
