MISC: The Bangor Daily News (Bangor, ME), Thursday, 6 May 1902: Has Stephen G. Peters deserted his wife and eight young children, leaving them to charity, has some accident befallen him - or what, is the question which has come before the people of Oldtown quite forcibly. A week ago Monday morning, the 28th of April, Peters left his home in Water street and went to the branch office of the Metropolitan Insurance Co. in the Perry block, where he was employed as collector. About 8:30 he walked out of the office, presumably to attend to his duties, and from that time until the present has dropped out of sight. No one has been found who can give the least information in regard to him. Mrs. Peters is surely in a pitiable condition. She is left with eight children, the youngest about two weeks old and with no means of support except charity. Peters formerly resided at Great Works, where he was for some time employed in the digester room of the Penobscot Chemical Fibre Co. About a year ago he was engaged as collector by the insurance company and moved to Oldtown. The cause of his disappearance seems to be a mystery. As far as can be learned, his accounts were straight. The system of the company does not allow collectors any great amount of money at a time, returns being made daily and frequent inspections. As far as known he had little or no money when he disappeared and was in rather reduced circumstances. Peters was about 45 years of age, of tall and slim build and light complexion. The authorities have not as yet taken up the matter. [As of 21 August 1902 nothing more was known.]
