Obituary: Kennebec Journal (Augusta, ME), Thursday, 21 April 1949: Gardiner - John B. Peters, 86, died suddenly at his Harrison Avenue home Wednesday afternoon. He was born August 27, 1880, at Petit Rocher, N.B., and was the son of Stephen and Judith Gallant Peters. He is survived by two sons, Albert J. and Lawrence J. of Gardiner; three daughters, Mrs. Fred Thornton of Gardiner, Mrs. Carl Purdy of Gardiner and Mrs. Langdon Wilson of Bethlehem, Penn.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, a brother Joseph of Clougett, Minn., a sister, Mrs. Dennis Bishop of Gardiner and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a member of the LOOM and had been employed at the S. D. Warren Paper Company for 43 years. Funeral mass will be from St. Joseph's Catholic Church at 9 o'clock Saturday morning. Friends may call at his Harrison Avenue home.

Obituary: Kennebec Journal (Augusta, ME), Monday, 25 August 1947: Gardiner - Mrs. Emily Peters died six hours after entering the Gardinar General Hospital Sunday evening. A Maine resident for 65 years, Mrs. Peters was born October 15, 1873 at St. Ejfrene, Quebec, the daughter of Joseph Roy and Martini Shainks. Surviving are her husband, John B.; two sons, J. Albert and Lawrence J., both of Gardiner; three daughters, Mrs. Fred Thornton, Mrs. Carl Purdy and Mrs. Langdon Wilson, all of Gardiner; one sister, Mrs. Joseph Joler of Waterville, and eight grandchildren. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 9 o'clock from St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Friends may call at the late home, 86 Harrison Avenue.

Mrs. Thornton was born in Gardiner Aug. 5, 1902, the daughter of John and Emily Roy Peters. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Gardiner. She had been employed for many years in various area shoe factories and was a homemaker for many years. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Fred S. Thornton, who died Feb. 7, 1968; her son, Fred J. Thornton, who died Aug. 2, 1992; two grandsons, Ronald B. and Michael J. Thornton, who both died July 22, 1980, and a great-grandson, Ronald P. Thornton Jr. who died July 13, 1979. She is survived by two sons, Mr. Robert L. and his wife, Erma, Thornton, and Mr. Richard T. Thornton and his friend, Madeline Spears, both of Gardiner; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Friends may call at Staples Funeral Home, Gardiner, Sunday 6-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Gardiner. The Rev. Clement D. Thibodeau will officiate. Burial will follow in the family lot, St. Joseph's Cemetery, Gardiner.

The Spohns were married four years last October. She was a custodian at Kutztown University for eight years before retiring in 1972. She served on Hellertown's election board for two years during the 1970s. Born in Gardner, Maine, she was a daughter of the late John B. and Emily (King) Peters. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kutztown. Survivors: Husband; son, Michael J. Wilson of Breinigsville R.2; daughters, Margaret M., wife of Mateo Pena of Bethlehem, and Ruthann W., wife of George M. Rosenberger of Hellertown; sister, Alice Thorton of Gardner; stepson, Paul L.
