- Saturday, 5 June 1920:  (Jennings Times-Record, LA):  Denounced by the press and challenged by the medical profession he may be, Brother Isaiah, the self-styled Divine Healer, of New Orleans, can claim adherents in Jennings, because in our midst is a marvelous cure effected by this exponent of the doctrine of faith.  For months little Edith Pitre, eleven year old daughter of Clarphy Pitre, clerk of court of Jefferson Davis Parish, has carried her right arm stiff and useless at her side, with fingers clutched tight, and neither doctors or the most renowned of Louisiana's Medical institutions have been able to restore its usefulness or even to discover the cause for the failure of the arm to function.  After many entreaties she was taken to New Orleans to visit Brother Isaiah on the bank of the river, but was unable to see him, so great was the crowd of sufferers. Leaving her handkerchief as directed by one of the assistants on the stand, she returned home, sad and disappointed. "I believed he could help me," she said, "and I was happy when the handkerchief was returned by mail with the instructions to rub it on the arm because I felt sure it would help me, and it did." After rubbing the arm with the anointed cloth, the fingers straightened and the arm moved from the elbow and then from the shoulder, and when her daddy came home a few hours later, she extended the once stiff and useless arm to shake hands.  "And now," she said, "I can go back to school when it opens and take up my lessons where I had to leave them."

Dorothy B. Pitre:  Houston ChronicleDorothy Pitre Conner passed from this life on February 5, 2011 at the age of 90.  She was born on May 20, 1920, in Jennings, Louisiana, to Clarify and Zelmire Hebert Pitre.  Dot graduated from Jennings High School where she was a cheerleader and played the clarinet in the marching band.  She attended college at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette for one year until the time of her father's death.  Dot was the baby sister of her family of six children, all of whom preceded her in death as well as her loving son, Michael E. Conner in 1986.  Dot lived in the Jennings until 1944 when she married George Eugene Conner a life-long friend.  They were wed at the Naval Air Station in Corpus, Texas, on March 15, 1944.  Assignments led them to bases in North and South Carolina until the end of the war.  Dot and George left Louisiana for the oil fields of west Texas and then to Houston in 1954.  By this time their family had grown to four children, George, Carol, Jane and Michael.  Dot busied herself with the activities of her family.  Dot served as a wonderful hostess for the many business events related to George's work in the oil boom days of the 50's and 60's.  Everyone has a great time with Dot and George none more so than Dorothy.  She loved to laugh, dance and cook and be with her many friends.  No one made a better apple pie, oatmeal cookies or chicken and sausage gumbo.  All of her children have tried to duplicate those recipes and failed.  In 1974 with the birth of her first grandchild, Dot's name was permanently changed to "Gubba."  She loved her grandchildren dearly and tried her best to support them in their endeavors.  A trip to NYC for a grandchild's college graduation in 2000 found her riding the subways like a native New Yorker.  Later that year while celebrating another granddaughter's graduation she insisted on being "carded" at Milwaukee bar and then lead all there in a toast to the graduates.  Gubba was always game for fun, seemingly never tired and could be counted on to be the last one on the dance floor.  Dot was a tireless volunteer for the Charity Guild of Catholic Women and received their lifetime commendation for her work.  She lived a life of giving to others and made lifelong friends through the Charity Guild and Al-Anon.  Dot was a daily communicant at St. Michael's Catholic Church.  Dot finally slowed down and moved to the Forum Assisted Living Facility where she was lovingly cared for by the staff and special sitters led by Selena Moody.  Dot is survived by her husband of 66 years, George E. Conner, her son, George E. Conner, Jr., and his wife Janine; daughter Carol Conner Wilson and her husband, Christopher J. Wilson, MD; daughter Jane Conner Huckaby and her husband, J. Stanley Huckaby; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Crawford, widow of son Michael.  Left to mourn her passing are her eight beloved grandchildren: Laura Meadows and her husband Kevin, Sarah Wilson, Kate Drone and her husband Mike, Catherine Conner, Adam Conner; Nathan Conner, Conner Huckaby, David Huckaby, and one great-grandchild, Caroline Meadows.  Dot has many nieces and nephews in Louisiana.  Dot was a sparkly, fun person who was loved by all generations and adopted as a surrogate "mother and grandmother" by many.  She kept us laughing and dancing and she will be greatly missed.  We will give thanks for her life at a mass to be celebrated at 10 A.M. Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at St. Michael Catholic Church, 1811 Sage Road, Houston Tx, 77056.  A graveside service is planned for a later date at the Calvary Cemetery in Jennings, Louisiana.  For those wishing, donations may be made in Dot's memory to The Charity Guild of Catholic Women 1203 Lovett Blvd., Houston, Texas 77006.
