Misc: The Daily Telegraph, St. John, St. John, NB, 10 April 1889: There is living at St. Andrews, about three miles from Bathurst, Mrs. Charles Pitre who is aged 104 years. She is quite smart and in possession of all her faculties. She can knit with such a rapidity as to make a young woman blush and she attends to the feeding of hens and is useful about the house in many other ways. [transcribed by Daniel F. Johnson]
- L'Evangeline (NB), 4 September 1890: Bathurst - A remarkable visit. -- Last Thursday, our workshop was honored with a very remarkable visit. Centenarians are rare, but those who, at such an advanced age, have retained all their faculties, and are able to travel and visit, are even rarer. This is the venerable lady who honoured us with her visit last week. Mrs. Charlo Pitre was born in Caraquet on August 2, 1785, from the marriage of Victor Theriault and Julie Thibodeau, so she was one hundred and five years old on August 2. In spite of her great age, this venerable woman is still in full possession of all her intellectual faculties; Her memory has been so well preserved, something quite rare among old men, that she still tells with the greatest ease, anecdotes of the past time. She visited with great interest the different parts of our printing house, our presses, etc. 85 years ago, she left Caraquet with one of her uncles to go to Bathurst on foot. That year she married Charles Pitre; their marriage was blessed by the Reverend M. Huot. Her husband's death separated them a long time ago. She has lived for several years with her son-in-law, Mr. Raphael Hache, in Sainte-Anne, near Bathurst. She can still knit, card, sew, thread her needle without the use of her glasses. 27 years ago, her eyesight became very poor for some time, so she had to use glasses. But his eyes are much better today and her strength seems to promise her several more years of existence. Courier des P.M.
