Unresolved query regarding parentage:

Auguste Joseph Pitre seemingly had a second wife, Marie Antoinette Janis, or at least a second relationship possibly not legalized by marriage.

From records found in Southwest Louisiana Records, we have Auguste Joseph's first marriage to Melasie Brandt in 1840.  For their two daughters, there is a marriage record for Marguerite Melasie to Augustin Pierre Bellard (Bellair) in 1857, and a baptism record for Marie Adeline (1843) and her 2 marriage records to Louis Pitre (1860) and Adolphe Cyprien Fontenot (1862).  There do not appear to be any other children.  This is reinforced in the estate proceedings following Auguste Joseph's death.

Also in Southwest Louisiana Records, there are 2 baptismal records for Augustin Pitre (1852), and Celine Pitre (1853), attributed to 'Auguste & Marie Antoinette Janis' and 'Auguste & Azelie Tulcea Jacques Baptiste' respectively.  It could be argued that the second entry may be too much of a stretch, so I will restrict myself to Augustin only.  This Marie Antoinette Janis appears the same as the one born 23 July 1815, d/o Mamert Janis dit Langrois & Marie Francoise Langlois, and was married to Victor Jean Baptiste Jannot on 13 April 1841.

The 1850 census (taken in November) reveals the following 2 families living not far from each other:

- Ww. Batiste Janeau 35, Jn. Bte. 7, Jn. Pierre 5, Lucas 3.

- Auguste J. Pitre 30, Melanie 6, Ami 4.

The 1860 census:

  Augustin J. Beller 23 (farmer), $3000 real estate, $7000 personal, Melazi J. Pitre 18;

  Louis Joachim Pitre 20 (farmer), wife Marguerite Joseph Pitre 17;

  Jean B. Jeanno 17 (farmer), Pierre Jeanno 15 (farmer).

There are no relationships listed but this would appear to be Auguste Joseph's 2 daughters and their respective husbands, plus 2 sons of Marie Antoinette Janis's 1st marriage to Victor Jean Baptiste Jannot.

I cannot find mention of Augustin Pitre until the 1880 census.  Augustin's wife is Marie Louise Reed, d/o Guillaume/Cecile JanisCecile Janis was sister to Marie Antoinette Janis.  This would make Augustin & wife Marie Louise 1st cousins.

Have the spouses of Auguste Joseph Pitre and Marie Antoinette Janis both died before the 1850 census, as both are missing from the households?  Does the burial record in Southwest Louisiana Records (Mme. Auguste J. Pitre nee Bouet d. 4 Dec. 1858 at age 40 yrs.) refer to Melasie Brandt or Marie Antoinette Janis?  If Auguste Joseph's son Augustin was legitimate, why was there an explicit statement in the estate proceedings regarding the fact that Auguste Joseph had only two legitimate heirs, i.e. the two elder daughters.
