MISC:  L'Evangeline (NB), 8 January 1891:  Murder in Belledune. "On the information of Mr. Joseph Doucet of the Jaquette River, W. D. Smith, Ecr., of Dalhousie, has issued a warrant for the arrest of five men—Cameron, Culligan, Young, Arseneau and Guitar—alleged to have participated in the murder of Williams in October 1890.  An arrest warrant was also issued for Antoine Pitre and his wife, Marie-Jeanne Doucet, Marguerite Pitre and Thomas Pitre — persons whose testimony will be invoked.  Cameron was stopped at the Jaquette River on the 1st of the current.  Geo. W. Allen of Fredericton is the Queen's Advocate.  Williams, according to an article in the Miramichi Advance, was a young sailor of English descent.  He had deserted Dalhousie in October 1890 and had taken refuge in Belledune, where he took his meals here and there.  One day he entered the home of Antoine Pitre whose residence, a kind of cabin, is located seven miles away of the Intercolonial station.  Williams dined in the cabin and got to spend the night there.  There were only two compartments in this hut, the kitchen and the bedroom.  Some time after supper, around 9 a.m., while Williams was in the bedroom with Pitre's daughter, one sitting on a chest and the other on the bed, five men burst into the kitchen, speaking aloud.  They were apparently under the influence of strong liquors.  Cameron, one of the men, entered the second compartment, and with murderer's blasphemy on his lips, he banged Williams hard with his fist on the head.  William did not pretend to want to resist, but he rolled under the bed near the wall.  Cameron pulled him out of that retreat and he pounded him on the head and where he could strike.  All this without cause or provocation. The girl wanted to intervene, but her interlocution only earned the poor fugitive blows.  While this tragedy was taking place, Pitre was absent; His wife and daughter were family alone at home.  When Williams was forced to seek salvation in flight, he was reportedly followed by Cameron and Culligan.  The last words heard from Williams were: 'For God's sake, don't murder me.' Williams has not been seen again since the events we have just briefly reported.  It is assumed in Belledune that Williams' murderers threw Williams' corpse into the sea.  This supposition is based on the fact that a rowboat, which had not been floated for some time, was seen arriving at the shore, mounted by strangers, before sunrise, a few days after what had happened at Pitre's."
