Notes for Ambroise Naquin:
- Ambroise Naquin was born c1725 in Cobequid, the eldest son of Acadian parents. About 1749 he married Elizabeth Bourg, also the child of Acadians. By the next year they had sought refuge at Ance a Pinet on the Ile St. Jean (his widowed father and some of his siblings were there also.) They had 4 children on the island, where they sowed grain and kept some animals. They were better off than many. In 1759 they were removed to France. On 9th March 1759, Ambroise, Elizabeth, children Elizabeth 8 and Jean Baptiste 6 disembarked at St. Malo from the ship du Supply. Two other young children, Pierre and Marguerite, had died at sea during the crossing to France. Daughter Madeleine was born the following month but lived only 4 weeks. Another Marguerite was born about 18 months later, but survived only 14 months. A son Ambroise was born in 1763, but died at eleven. The daughter Elizabeth died at the age of 20 and Jean Baptiste at 13. Twins Joseph Jacques and Pierre Paul were born in January of 1766 and were the only surviving children of this tragic family. A daughter Madeleine followed 2 years later but died at the age of 8. The family lived in St. Suliac through at least 1772. In March of 1776 Ambroise, Elizabeth, Joseph & Pierre were in the 4th convoy which left Chatellerault for Nantes. And on 27 June 1785 they left France on Le Saint Remi bound for LA. On 10 September 1785 this large frigate with 325 passengers and a great load of baggage, furniture and trunks, discharged these Acadian exiles who had been without a permanent home for so long. Among them were the now small family of Ambroise Naquin, plowman 60, wife Elizabeth Bourg 58, and sons Joseph 19, and Pierre 19, both carpenters. They settled in Lafourche, the twins both marrying other Acadian descendants in 1787. Most probably Ambroise and wife Elizabeth died within those first few years as neither shows up in any Lafourche census of that time.
- 1752 census Ile St. Jean, Anse a Pinet: Ambroise Naquin, native of l'Acadie, aged 27 years, he has been two years in the country. Married to Isabelle Bourg, native of l'Acadie, aged 20 years. They have Isabelle Naquin, their daughter, aged two years. And in stock, two oxen, two cows, one calf, one horse, one ewe, four pigs, and two fowls. The land upon which they are settled is situated on the south side of Ance à Pinet. It was given to them verbally by Monsieur de Bonnaventure. On it they have made a clearing for the sowing of a bushel and a half of grain.
