Be it known & remembered that on this 24th day of November 1827, I, Leufroy Barras, judge for the parish of Terrebonne, at the request of Brigite Belanger, widow of the late Henry S. Thibodaux, & Leandre B. Thibodaux, both of this parish and testamentary executors of the said Henry S. Thibodaux, according to his olographic testament dated the 28th July 1817 – have traveled to the plantation and late residence of Henry S. Thibodaux deceased in order to make an inventory and appraisement of all the property left by said deceased & to that effect I have nominated Messrs. Lemuel Tanner & S.G. Moore, both of this parish, appraisers to whom I have administered the oath required by law & after having administered the same oath to the aforesaid Brigit Belanger to exhibit to the aforesaid appraisers all the property, belonging to said estate:  We have proceeded, in the presence of Joseph Delaporte & Joachim Porche, two good witnesses called for that purpose & also in the presence of Leandre B. Thibodaux, Aubin Thibodaux, Eugenie Bourgeois nee Thibodaux, Joseph P. Bourgeois, her husband, Henry M. Thibodaux, Elmire Thibodaux & Evariste Porche her husband as follows, viz:

 

1- One tract of land situated about 4 miles from Lafourche containing 12 arpents front on the right bank and 13 on the left bank of Bayou Terrebonne, with the depth of 40 arpents on the right side and 30 on the other, bounded above by the land of Leandre B. Thibodaux on the right bank & by land belonging to this estate on the left; and below by land of Jacques Verret: together with all the buildings thereunto erected excepting the canes in matelass             [$17,400]

2- About 12 arpents of canes in matelass     [$720]

The appraisers & all the heirs having considered that the canes in matelass have been appraised too high, are of opinion that appraisement ought to be reduced to $50 an arpent, which makes a deduction of     [-$120]

Inventory & Appraisement (Interior Lafourche)

Know all men by these presents that on Saturday morning, the 5th day of January in the year of our Lord 1828, at 11:30, pursuant to a commission of the Hon. Leufroy Barras, parish judge of the parish of Terrebonne, authorizing me the subscribing judge of the parish of Lafourche interior, to take an inventory of all the property, real and personal whatever, situate within the latter parish and belonging to the Estate of Henry S. Thibodaux, deceased, late of the parish of Terrebonne, and to the community which formerly existed between the said Thibodaux and Brigite Belanger, his surviving wife, -

I, Pierre Daspit, parish judge of the interior parish of Lafourche, and ex officio notary public in and for the said parish, accompanied and assisted by John White, a house carpenter and Henry F. Knoblock, a scrivener, both domiciled in the latter parish, and competent witnesses, went to the court house at Thibodauxville, there to proceed to said inventory; and there we found:

  1. Leander B. Thibodaux, of the parish of Terrebonne
  2. Aubin B. Thibodaux, of the interior parish of Lafourche
  3. Joseph Bourgeois, also of the parish of Terrebonne, husband of Eugenie Thibodaux, the said Bourgeois acting for & in behalf of the said Eugenie, his wife,
  4. Henry Michel Thibodaux, of the interior parish of Lafourche
  5. Leufroy Barras, of the parish of Terrebonne, acting for & in behalf of Emilie Thibodaux, his wife,
  6. Lemeul Tanner, also of the parish of Terrebonne, curator ad Lites of the minors above the age of puberty, Henry Claiborne Thibodaux and Barron Goforth Thibodaux.

 

The parties absent are Brigitte Bellanger, widow of the said Henry S. Thibodaux, and Elmire Thibodaux, wife of Evariste Porche, all of the parish of Terrebonne.

 

She the said Brigitte Bellanger being entitled to the property she has brought in marriage to the said Henry S. Thibodaux deceased, and to one half of the acquests and gains of the community lately existing between her and her said husband, deceased.

 

They the said Leander B. Thibodaux, Aubin B. Thibodaux and Eugenie Thibodaux being the issue of a former marriage of the said Henry S. Thibodaux with Felicite Bonvilain, deceased, and they the said Henry Michel Thibodaux, Emilie Thibodaux, Elmire Thibodaux, Henry Claiborne Thibodaux and Banon Goforth Thibodaux, being the issue of the marriage of the said Henry S. Thibodaux with the said Brigite Bellanger – are entitled to the whole of the succession of the said Henry S. Thibodaux, their father deceased, and to the other half of said acquests and gains.

 

The said inventory is made on the declaration of Leander B. Thibodaux, who has promised under oath to declare all and whatever, to the best of his knowledge,  should be inventoried herein.

 

The appraisement of the property is made by Samuel S. Wheeler, attorney at law, and Auguste Roger, a tavern keeper of the interior parish of Lafourche, experts duly appointed and sworn by me, the said judge.

 

The said inventory is as follows:

1. The upper half of a lot situate in Thibodauxville, and figured on the plan of Thibodauxville, under #3, with a house thereon     [$250]

30. A tract of land measuring about 650 superficial arpents, situate in the interior parish of Lafourche, back of the lands of Alexis Lejeune & others, at or near a place called bayou La Blaque     [$600]

 

Total amount: $4900

 

Closed this inventory at 3PM, its amount being $4900, and the parties present have signed with the appraisers, the witnesses and me, the said judge.
