Notes for Guillaume Romain Arcement:
- Guillaume, born 1772 in France, was the 8th of ten children born to his Acadian exile parents. In 1785 he made the journey with his parents and siblings on "La Ville d'Archangel" to the LA territory. They settled along Bayou Lafourche where his mother died shortly after. Most of Guillaume's siblings married in those first few years so it was left to Guillaume along with his father, and two younger sisters to farm their plot. This strip, on Bayou Lafourche (on what became the White Plantation), was the claim approved by the U.S. Government as valid, in Guillaume's name in 1803. It contained 229.51 superficial acres. In that year 31-year-old Guillaume married Marie Mariane Aysenne, the daughter of German Coast settlers, who was one month shy of her 15th birthday. They had 16 children over the next 31 years. The next 3 censuses show Guillaume on the same land. Due to the number of children the family probably had a fair-sized house which, if not part of the present E.D. White house, may have been the section that later became the kitchen. The kitchen was in back and separate from the present house because of the fire danger. The amount Guillaume received for selling to E.D. White was much more than his neighbors, indicating a large house was probably on the site. On 8 October 1824, Guillaume sold a 1 ˝ arpent section to Joseph Fabien and Narcisse Bourg for $1200. (The Bourgs sold this piece to White on 23 October 1828, while Guillaume still had a mortgage on it. Reservation in the sale was for the Bourgs to have the right to occupy the house, which they had built on the property, until August 1832. Total of the sale was $1400 of which $500 was being paid then and two installments of $450, one due August 1831 and the other due August 1832, an increase of $200 above the original purchase from Guillaume.) Guillaume sold the remaining property by mortgage to E.D. White on 21 September 1831, described as 4 arpents front by 40 arpents in depth, right bank Bayou Lafourche, 9 leagues from the Miss. River, for $6000. They moved into Assumption parish and the 1850 census places Guillaume & Marianne at house #57. Guillaume died that summer and by the 1860 census Marianne was still living in Lafourche age 72, with two of her sons (Etienne 39, laborer & Auguste 31, laborer) and granddaughter Zulma Juneau.
