From Saint-Jean-Baptiste des Allemands, Abstracts of the Civil Records of St. John the Baptist Parish to 1803, [author Glenn R. Conrad, published by The Center for Louisiana Studies, University of Southwestern Louisiana, Lafayette, Louisiana]. p.85: No. 47 (2-19-88): It reads: Inventory of the effects of Christian Charles Smith. Christian Charles Smith died January 28, 1788. O'Conor went to Smith's farm to take an inventory of his belongings and there he found Francois Hisen (Hayes) and his wife, Marie-Therese Smith, daughter of the deceased. Inventory is taken by Jean-Louis Picou and Pierre Berthelote in the presence of Francois Hisen. Debts owed to Smith by: Francois Percle. Debts owed by the deceased to: Alexis Picou. (Note: Hisen's name also appears as "Hizen." Although one might conclude from the spelling of the name "Smith" or "Smyth" that the individual was English, the proper spelling was probably "Schmidt" and the man was a German. One is brought to this conclusion by the fact that his library, listed in the inventory, consisted entirely of books in German.
