Notes for Peter Johnson:

- According to his son’s obituary (Lewis Johnson), Peter Johnson was “'the owner and captain of a sailing vessel which plied the Gulf of Mexico between New Orleans and Tampico, Mexico.”

- The births of Lewis & Malvina were registered on 6 October 1845, by Mr. Jacob Shultz, native Prussia, aged 39, residing on Greatman St. between Elysian Fields & Marigny St. (3rd Municipality), listing the parents as ‘Peter Johnson, native of Germany, aged about 40, & Charlotte Hoffman.’  (vol. 7, p. 809)    At the same time Jacob Shultz also registered the birth of Andrew James Saul (born 7 February 1844 at the house of his parents situated on Spain Street between Greatmen and Craps Streets in the 3rd municipality), legitimate issue of Henry Saul and of Charlotte Hoffman a native of this city.

- 1842 New Orleans directory: Mrs. Johnson 7 Craps St.  [Craps Street = Burgundy Street]

[Possibly wrong Peter Johnson:  - 3 October 1843 - Richard St. John, schooner, of New Orleans, registered No. 102, owner Isidore Antoine Quempere, N.O.; master: Peter Johnson.  Tuesday, 2 January 1844 - Times Picayune (N.O., LA) - Died 9th December (1843) at Tampico, Capt. Peter Johnson, of the schooner Richard St. John, of this port.]

[The old residence of Lewis Johnson was down on Erato St.  Eads Johnson Jr. (Peter Johnson's great-grandson) visited the site in 1943, still standing but quite a mess in a grubby neighborhood.  His knowledge of Lewis Johnson's background comes from recollections his stepmother (Eads Johnson Sr.'s 2nd wife) gleaned from cousin Shirley Johnson Stearns (Peter Johnson's granddaughter).  His (Lewis Johnson's) father Peter's family were Swedish or Norwegian and he (Peter Johnson) apparently married Charlotte, Lewis' mother in N.O.  She was the daughter of a silk factory owner in Germany named Russmeyer whose wife may have been named Christine.  Peter Johnson was the owner and captain of a ship which plied the gulf between N. O. and Tampico, Mexico.  Eads asked his own father where his grandfather (Lewis Johnson) had come from and his father replied that he had asked the same question when he was younger and received the inadequate answer: "It is sufficient for you to know young man that you come from good, upright, Christian parents."]

Notes for Charlotte Hoffman:

- Second husband Henry Saul/Saal/Sahl was born Abt. 1805 in Germany, and died aft. March 1859.  They were married Bef. 1850 in New Orleans, LA.

- 4 September 1850 New Orleans, LA (W2, 3rd municipality, p. 146A):  Henry Saul 45 (Ger) pilot [$1000 real estate], wife Charlotte Saul 34 (Ger), Lewis Johnson 14, Malvina Johnson 12 attended school within the year, Emily Saul 4.  [This Charlotte may be Charlotte Christina Rustimyer - born Germany]

- The Charlotte Hoffman who was the wife of Peter Johnson was probably Henry Saul's 1st marriage to a Charlotte Hoffman (and mother of Andrew James Saul).  She was not the daughter of Marie Adolphe Cesar Hoffman/Marie Francoise Vigne.  The estate of the deceased Adolphe Hoffman was filed on 7 May 1836, referencing his widow as Madame Fanny Vigne and their 2 minor children, Miss Charlotte Hoffman & Adolphe Hoffman and requesting an inventory of residence on Conti Street.  This Marie Charlotte Frederique Hoffman married a Swedish immigrant Charles Nystrand 5 November 1842 and had at least 2 children recorded in New Orleans: Marie Charlotte Nystrand 9 September 1843 & Christine Frederica Nystrand 14 May 1846.  They removed to Vicksburg, MS where Charles died in 1877 & Charlotte in 1883.

Ancestral musings:

- It is feasible that by 6 October 1845, Lewis & Malvina's mother Charlotte Hoffman has died.  I've drawn this conclusion because on 6 October 1845, Jacob Schultz, also a boat pilot (along with Henry Saul & Peter Johnson) registers the births of Charlotte Hoffman's 3 children: Lewis Johnson (8 June 1836), Malvina Johnson (30 August 1838) & Andrew James Saul (7 February 1844 - b. on Spain between Greatman & Craps; mother is native of N.O.).  Peter Johnson was born in Germany and Charlotte Hoffman was born in New Orleans.  Jacob Schultz & Henry Saul were also born in Germany.

- Peter Johnson may have died sometime between 1838 & 1844 and my extracts regarding his death in December 1843 may be in error.

- The connection between Lewis & Malvina's mother (Charlotte Hoffman) and Henry Saul is due to 2 items:  The 1850 census in New Orleans, lists Henry Saul, pilot, age 45 (b. Germany), Charlotte Saul, age 34 (b. Germany), along with Lewis Johnson 14, Malvina Johnson 12 and Emily Saul 4.  Henry Saul is also listed on Malvina Johnson's marriage license application.

- The death of Andrew James Saul (24 March 1849) was reported by Henry Saul (residence corner Craps & Clouet) as being the legitimate son of himself & Mrs. (or Miss) Charlott Christina Rustimyer.  The Charlotte in the 1850 census is German so unlikely to be the natural mother, however, the child could easily now be the legal son of this couple if the mother Charlotte Hoffman has died while married to Henry Saul.  Andrew James Saul could be the progeny of Peter Johnson & Charlotte Hoffman but born after Peter Johnson died and Charlotte Hoffman remarried to Henry Saul.

- There are then 4 births recorded as children of Henry Saul/Sahl & Charlotte/a Christina Brustimyer/Rostmayer/Bustimeyer/Ruesthemeyer in 1846, 1848, 1851 & 1854.

- Which leaves me with the question of who is Mrs./Miss Charlott Christina Rustimyer?

- Times Picayune (New Orleans, LA), 19 August 1871:  Fatal Casualty: Two Men Killed. About 6 o'clock yesterday morning the horses attached to a buggy on Old Levee, between Ursulines and St. Philip street, took fright and, running away, the vehicle was overturned and the occupants, two men, were thrown out and killed.  They were Mr. Leon Bar, residing at the corner of Greatmen and Spain streets, and Mr. Jacob Schultz, living on Greatmen, between Spain and Port streets.  Mr. Bar's heading coming in contact with the curbing as he was precipitated from the buggy was killed instantly.  The injuries of Mr. Schultz were not immediately fatal, but he died before reaching his residence.  The fright of the horses was occasioned by the blowing off of steam of a locomotive on the Pontchartrain Railroad.  Mr. Schultz was formerly captain of the tugboat Gladiator.  Mr. Bar was a grocer on Greatmen street.  His body was conveyed to the Chartres Street Station, and the Coroner notified to hold an inquest.  [Probate: wife, sons Theodore, Albert & Constantine]

**Assumptions based on current data, but not proven:  Peter Johnson's date of death; that the Charlotte Hoffman (b. N.O.) married to Henry Saul in 1850 census was firstly married to Peter Johnson; that the Charlotte listed as Henry's wife in 1850 may be a different Charlotte (b. Ger) named Charlotte Christina Rustimyer (different spellings).
