- Obituary, Vermont Phoenix (Brattleboro, VT), Friday, 23 August 1901:  Thatcher Perry, 83, died early yesterday morning at his home on Green street, after being ill two weeks.  He had an attack of grip four years ago, which left him in an enfeebled condition, so that he had not sufficient strength to rally from his last illness.  By his death Brattleboro has lost one of her best citizens, a man who always looked upon matters from their brightest side, who never had other than a kind word for any person, and whose daily life built up in the minds of all who knew him a monument to his memory of the most enduring kind.  Mr. Perry was born in Brookline Aug. 3, 1818.  His father, Dr. William Perry, was in his time a celebrated physician.  Thatcher Perry was one of 11 children.  The only one now living was his half brother, George Perry of Westmoreland, N.H.  Mr. Perry came to Brattleboro 58 years ago, and had lived here ever since, with the exception of three years, which he spent in California, going to that state with a party of Brattleboro men, including the late Fred H. Harris and others, after gold was discovered there.  He retired from active work 15 to 20 years ago, but before that he spent the greater part of his life in Brattleboro as a fly finisher in the Estey organ factories.  Mr. Perry married Laura Harris of Chesterfield, N.H., and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1895.  They had three children, one who died in childhood, Engineer Fred T. Perry died a year ago last April, and the third, Chauncey S. Perry, is a printer in Bennington.  The funeral will be held at the house at 2 o'clock tomorrow, Rev. R. K. Marvin officiating.  It will be private in accordance with Mr. Perry's expressed desire.  The burial will be in Prospect Hill cemetery.

- 1910 Brattleboro, Windham, VT (ED 245, p. 2A): Laura Perry 83 widow, living w/Henry S. Allard 45 & wife Emma 41

- Obituary:  Vermont Phoenix (Brattleboro, VT), Friday, 6 December 1912:  Mrs. Thatcher Perry - Mrs. Laura Harris Perry, 85, widow of Thatcher Perry, died in the home of Henry B. Allen on Oak street Monday evening following an attack nine weeks ago of bronchitis.  For many years she had been a resident of this town and had been an efficient worker in the Universalist church.  Mrs. Perry was born Jan. 17, 1827, in Chesterfield and was the youngest of nine children of Ezekiel and Jerusha (Snow) Harris.  She spent the earlier part of her life in her native town until her marriage to Thatcher Perry of this town, a native of Brookline, which took place Nov. 11, 1845.  They came here to live and Mr. Perry followed his trade as carpenter until the gold craze in California in 1849 broke out, when he went to that section of the country with the late F. H. Harris.  Mr. Perry remained in California about eight years, but without great success.  He returned to this town and shortly afterwards entered the employ of the Estey Organ company, being employed there until he retired in 1889.  For many years Mr. and Mrs. Perry lived in the house at 30 Green street.  They observed their 50th wedding anniversary Nov. 11, 1895.  Mr. Perry died Aug. 22, 1901.  Three children were born to them.  One died in infancy and Fred T. Perry, an engineer on the Boston & Maine railroad between Windsor and Springfield, died April 23, 1900.  The third son, Chauncey S. Perry, is a member of the firm of Perry & Keesman of Bennington, printers.  There are also two grandsons, Fred Perry and Roy B. Perry of Bennington.  The funeral was held in the home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. D. E. Trout officiating.  The burial took place in Prospect Hill cemetery.  The bearers were C. A. Harris, D. E. Tasker, W. H. Perry and C. C. Perry, her son.  Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Hiland Kenney, Miss Kate Perry and Mrs. Hibbard Black of Greenfield.

- Brattleboro Reformer (VT), Friday, 22 November 1907:  Uncle Lewis Higgins dead - aged stage driver and liveryman had lived here 60 years - Lewis S. Higgins, 83, died in the Brattleboro Memorial hospital Wednesday morning at about 2:30 from the effects of a gangrenous condition of one foot brought on by the removal of a corn.  Mr. Higgins was taken to the hospital about six weeks ago but his constitution was not strong enough to allow an operation and the progress of the disease could be checked in no other way.  "Uncle Lewis" as he was findly known by almost everyone in Brattleboro, was one of the last of the old-time stage drivers in Windham county and had lived in Brattleboro 60 years the last day of last March.  He came here in the old stage days before the advent of railroads in this section and was in a position to see all sides of life as it was then lived.  He delighted to tell of the merry times that used to take place in those days and his stories were told in such a delightful vein that he was never at a loss for an audience.  During his years of service as a liveryman in town he made the acquaintance of all sorts of people and his quiet, genial disposition made him a favorite with all.  No man was better acquainted with the highways and byways of this section, nor was there one who could make a drive more entertaining and enjoyable.  Uncle Lewis knew the stories that surrounded every historical spot and was always willing to tell them, adding much to their enjoyment by his dry wit.  He was an ardent admirer of good horseflesh and an extremely cautious driver, and had probably piloted more sleighrides and tallyho trips to various points in the vicinity of Brattleboro than any other man.  Mr. Higgins was a man of musical attainments and in former years no orchestra was complete unless it contained Uncle Lewis and his bass viol.  He was also much in demand as a prompter and many of the older residents of the town remember with pleasure the old-fashioned figures they trod at his direction.  Only last January he "called off" a dance in Brattleboro and seemed to enjoy the occasion as much as any of the dancers.  For 20 years Mr. Higgins sang or played in the Universalist church.  Mr. Higgins was born in Newfane, Dec. 10, 1823, and was one of five children of Edison and Mary (Bruce) Higgins.  When about 6 years old he moved with his parents to Brookline and after several years went to Townshend to live.  While there for part of the time he attended the Leland and Gray Classical and English school, now Leland and Gray seminary.  It was from this town that he made his first venture as a stage coach driver, making trips to Stratton and to Brattleboro.  The family then moved to Newfane again where his father bought the Fayetteville hotel.  Mr. Higgins then drove the Bellows Falls and Wilmington stage.  This was one of those never-to-be-forgotten Concord "thorough-braces."  He also drove stage occasionally to Greenfield, Mass., and Keene, N.H.  The family moved to Brookline and from there Mr. Higgins came to Brattleboro where he began the vocation of a carpenter.  He was employed in the Stearns rule factory for 18 years.  Mr. Higgins would let his horse occasionally, and from this small beginning his large and well established livery business at 1 Oak street grew.  He continued in this business up to about four years ago.  Mr. Higgins was twice married.  His first wife was Jane E. Harris of Chesterfield, N.H., daughter of Ezekiel Harris.  On Dec. 25, 1866, he married Jane E. Simonds of Brattleboro.  She died June 2, 1895.  There were no children.  Mr. Higgins is survived by one brother, Ira Higgins of Brattleboro.  The funeral will take place at the Universalist church this afternoon at 2 o'clock.  [photo included]
